Nice copy. Daniel Henry Holmes, Jr. (1851-1908) was born in New York City, and later lived with his family in New Orleans. In 1852 his father bought a summer home near Covington, Kentucky which they called Holmesdale. The young Holmes spent his summers in Kentucky and his winters in New Orleans. As a young man Holmes moved to Holmesdale and took up the practice of law, in what William S. Ward called, "a desultory fashion." As a poet he took "old tags of nursery rhymes and fashioned out of them some of the tenderest lyrics ever written" - Mosher. Bishop 422.2 PRESS/W39

195326847New York: Roy Publishers. Very Good in Fair dj. c.1953. First American Edition. Hardcover. moderate shelfwear slight bumping/indentation at left side of lower edge of front cover; jacket is somewhat tattered with considerable paper loss surrounding both top and bottom of spine soiling to rear panel various other tears and edge-nicks etc. A major work of film theory by this prominent Hungarian film critic and theoretician 1884-1949 here translated into English for the first time -- posthumously alas. "This book may be said to be the sum of thirty years of thought and practical work. It is both an historical review of the development of film art -- a development which Balázs believes to be as yet scarce begun -- and an attempt to establish its specific laws and draw the line which divides it from all other arts." .
