" Vor einigen Jahren gab mein Freund Herr Cap im Paris ein Werk heraus unter dem Titel "Pricipes élémentaires de Pharamceutique ou exposititon du système de connaissances relatives à l'art du Pharmacien. Paris 1837. " Dieses Werk ist so vortrefflich bearbeitet es giebt eine so klare Auseinandersetzung der Wissenschaften der Lehren und Pflichten die bei dem Studium und der Ausübung der Pharmacie in Betracht kommen die darin entwickelten Ansichten und Grundsätzen sind so sehr der Erfahrung entnommen und fand ich solche mitmeinen eigenen Ansichten und Grundsätzen so in Übereinstimmung daß ich mich entschloß dieses Werk ins Deutsche zu übertragen um so mehr da ich schon vor Jahren die Bearbeitung eines ähnlichen Buches angefangen hatte die aber wegen Mangel an Zeit nicht beendet werden konnte. Eine bloße Uebersetzung des Cap'schen Werkes schien mir jedoch keinesweges hinreichend um den Zweck desselben auch in Deutschland zu erreichen namentlich weil die Verhältnisse der Pharmacie in Frankreich von den unsrigen in mannichfachen Beziehungen abweichen. Ich fand es demnach für erforderlich das Werk ganz umzuarbeiten um es unseren Verhältnissen anzupassen. Mehre Kapitel sind deshalb verändert Vieles ist neu hinzugefügt und eine große Reihe von Gegenständen die nur angedeutet waren ist eine weitere Wissenschaftliche Ausführung gegeben worden. ." Simon Rudolph Brandes 19. Oktober 1795 in Salzuflen; 3. Dezember 1842 ebenda war ein deutscher Apotheker und Naturwissenschaftler. Im biedermeierlichen Salzuflen führte er eine Apotheke und gründete hier den Apothekerverein im nördlichen Teutschland Vorläufer des heutigen Deutschen Apothekerverbandes. Er stand mit Justus von Liebig und Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in Verbindung. unknown

The first part gives a history of the Natural History Museum in France 1635-1853 with biographies and portraits of famous men associated with it i.e. Tournefort Buffon Jussieu Cuvier &c. and details on the gathering and remitting of foreign specimens by explorers and colonials from Canada and elsewhere. There is a double-page plan of the garden of medicinal plants in 1636 and single page plans of the Jardin du Roi in 1640 and 1788. The second part gives a description of the museum in 1853 administration and budget topography botanical school gardens orchard greenhouses menagerie mineralogy collection and library.
