42771thanking him for his "nice kind letter about Old Spain. But it is the Book in a Million! You must buy it! What about buying it from me in two or three instalments That could be managed all right. I would like so much for you to have it that I'll tell you what I'll do - I'll give you a Spanish sketch into the bargain! What do you think Delighted to hear that Nigel Warren has one. It really is a fine thing." 1 side 4to. with original autograph envelope Grayflete Ferry Hinksey Oxford headed paper 3rd December For many years Bone and his wife Gertrude took up residence in Italy and Spain. His book 'Old Spain' is a monumental collection of his drawings and prints of Spain which were "gathered during leisurely visits extending over the last years of the old régime." Bone's work is known for its meticulous detail without ever becoming laboured. unknown
391941874-1948 Head of the Liverpool School of Architecture thanking him for "sending me the Cripps Petition. Certainly I will sign it and I shall ask Gavin what he thinks about it. But not easy for usto get more signatures - however I'll see about it. I have not been back to Brightonsince I saw you. I think I can finishe that drawing of the front without goig back. Lutyens looked fine at the RA banquet and I liked very much his air of courtesy and hospitality without pompousness. From where I was unfortunately he was not very audible so. I only mastered his speech next morning but don't tell him this!. I think a school of traditional architecture is much needed in London when I see the full horror of that horrible new side of Berkeley Square. There are lots of good things to pick out in the RA - the total effect is a jumble but I don't see how you can avoid that especially in these days. Stephen I'm glad to say sold his big picture on Private View day. I haven't forgotten the kind promise of yourself and your friend to buy drawings for my 'Casals Fund'." with a postscript that he has "a very elaborate drawing of John Brown's Shipyard Clydebank with the 'Queen Elizabeth' building at the R.A." 2 sides 4to. with original autograph envelope Grayflete Ferry Hinksey Oxford 1st May In early 1939 Stafford Cripps 1869-1952 Politician was expelled from the Labour Party for his advocacy of a Popular Front with the Communist Party the Independent Labour Party the Liberal Party and anti-appeasement Conservatives. Plainly the Bones agreed with his views. Sir Edwin Lutyens 1869-1944 Architect. The architectural historian Gavin Stamp described him as "surely the greatest British architect of the twentieth or of any other century" Bone's son Stephen 1904-1958 was a painter writer and Broadcast and noted war artist. unknown
391921874-1948 Head of the Liverpool School of Architecture saying that "Encouraged by Mary I am venturing to bother you with this prospectus of my Spanish book. It reproduces really magnificently some 180 of my drawings - altogether a terrific work! Two original etchings also. It may amuse you - I hope you may find a moment in London to have a look at the book itself. Mary suggests to me that your friend Mr Peter Jones of Liverpool might be interested to hear of the book so I enclose a second prospectus. We are all here in Norfolk for the health of younger son Gavin - he has had a long fight with tuberculosis but I am glad to say is ever so much better now only has to be careful & this Norfolk air suits him. he is getting attention at the Sanatorium at Mundesley." and ends with the hope that "your own health is much improved" 1 side 4to. Sunnywood West Runton Cromer Norfolk 14th July His son Stephen 1904-1958 Painter writer and Broadcast and noted war artist married Mary Adshead 1904-1995 Artist and Illustrator in 1929. It is likely that she is the Mary he refers to. The book for which he is sending the prospectus would be his 1936 collaboration with his wife Gertrude Bone 1876-1962 Days in Old Spain. Their son Gavin died in 1943. unknown
391931874-1948 Head of the Liverpool School of Architecture thanking him for his good wishes and saying that "Just at present I am very busy with drawing the floodlit nights in London. Did you see a full page drawing I had in the Times last Thursday It might amuse! Really writing this from Stephen's house. & my wife is in Oxford but I am sure she sends her kind regards to you and your wife. I am glad to say that Stephen is now better after his nasty illness in Paris." with a postscript that is is "very proud of being an LL.D of Liverpool" 2 sides 4to. with original autograph envelope Crayflete Oxford headed paper 15th May His son Stephen 1904-1958 Painter writer and Broadcast and noted war artist.
