These splendidly illustrated volumes which include a detailed account of the Parisian museum of Natural History are presented in the spectacular original cloth. Histoire naturelle des familles végétales was published in 1852. The Trois règnes de la nature series also included two volumes on mammals. Provenance: Stephen C. Massey. 3 vols quarto. Frontispieces Muséum hand-coloured Oiseux with 35 plates 15 hand-coloured Végétales with 42 plates 23 hand-coloured Muséum with 41 plates 14 hand-coloured 3 double page many wood-engravings to text. Original blue blind-stamped wave-grain cloth spines lettered in gilt spines and boards elaborately block in gilt with varicoloured details in relief yellow coated endpapers edges gilt. Muséum spine faded and foot worn bindings minimally rubbed and presenting very well endpapers occasionally marked Oiseaux and Muséum cracked at rear hinges but firm the odd blemish to contents. A very good set. hardcover

First Edition. Actually forming part of a larger work but complete on its own and usually found thus. The first part gives a history of the Natural History Museum in France 1635-1853 with biographies and portraits of famous men associated with it i.e. Tournefort Buffon Jussieu Cuvier &c. and details on the gathering and remitting of foreign specimens by explorers and colonials from Canada and elsewhere. There is a double-page plan of the garden of medicinal plants in 1636 and single page plans of the Jardin du Roi in 1640 and 1788. The second part gives a description of the museum in 1853 administration and budget topography botanical school gardens orchard greenhouses menagerie mineralogy collection and library.
