This address which was the first notable comment by an African American about Whitman's significance was delivered by Kelly at the Fellowship's Annual Meeting on May 31st 1895. It was originally published in July in the Conservator a journal published by Horace Traubel who was instrumental in setting up the Fellowship.</p><p>Scientist Kelly Miller 1863-1939 was an African American mathematician sociologist essayist newspaper columnist and author.
