In 1872 John Watkinson started a chess column in the Huddersfield College Magazine. Eventually the single page column became a small magazine exclusively devoted to chess - <em>The Huddersfield College Chess Magazine</em>. Finally this magazine evolved into the<em> British Chess Magazine</em> which is still going strong today. The columns provide an interesting glimpse of the local Huddersfield & Yorkshire chess scene at the time before eventually becoming more nationally and internationally oriented in later years. In the fall of 1785 after Revolutionary War service Greene and family settled to Mulberry Grove in Chatham County Georgia near Savannah where land had been gifted from the State of Georgia and the Carolinas yet Nathanael's time there would be short -within one year Greene was dead. The children's tutor Phineas Miller took up the role of plantation manager. It is within this time period that this letter was written I have sent you the best assortment of garden seeds I am now able to procure - They are from a retailer who received them fput up mark'd and warranted from Col. Wadsworth's gardener. Col. Jeremiah Wadsworth was a friend of General Greenes. I intended to have had a larger assortment selected by himself but he went out to West Division early this morning with the intention of putting them up this evening and Capt. Sweet sails today so that I had no alternativebut to get them of the retailer - I have put on board a salmon for your family and Mrs. Ward with very particular directions to Capt. Sweet to take care of it and hope it may arrive good and prove agreeable - Please to present my most respectful compliments to the Governor and family and permit tme to to be Madam your Most Obedient and Very Humble Servant. -- Phins. Miller. In 1792 after passionate and active work on the part of the widow the crushing debt that General Greene amassed during the Revolutionary War was erased. In this same year Eli Whitney came aboard the plantation to assist. Within the year the cotton gin was fully developed. On March 14 1794 Whitney received a patent for the cotton gin - it was debuted on the plantation grounds. By some reports she was in partnership with Miller in the financial and logistical support of the process of patent and production of the gin. In an 1883 article in The North American Review titled "Woman as Inventor" the early feminist and abolitionist Matilda Joslyn Gage claimed that Mrs. Greene suggested to Whitney the use of a brush-like component which was instrumental in separating the seeds from the cotton. In 1796 Phineas and Catherine were married but Mulberry Grove would not outlast the duo. By 1798 it was sold and the Millers moved to Cumberland Island to land given to Gen. The twelfth edition with frontispiece and five folding plates and a Short Introduction to the Knowledge of the Science of Botany pp. 371-417 freely adapted from Linnaeus's early works on binomial nomenclature and descriptive systemic botany. The preface states that "to this edition of the Gardeners Kalendar the author was advised to subjoin a short Introduction to the Science of Botany; in which the definitions of terms of art which are used in the present favourite system of Doctor Linnaeus should be explained for the benefit of practical gardeners . the whole was prepared for the press before the translation of Linnaeus's Philosophia Botanica published by Mr. Lee made its appearance." This is presumably one of the first English explanations of Linnaeus's taxonomic work which was still being fleshed out by Linnaeus though it is certainly the first of Philip Miller's popular works to be based on the Linnaean system and also the first with more than simply a frontispiece; the five additional folding plates depict examples of plant Families from the Short Introduction. Inside in very good clean condition with no foxing or aging to pages with 10 pages that have old tape repairs to edges. In 1730 Philip Miller was asked by Nathan Bailey the English lexicographer to write the botanical entries for the Dictionarium Britannicum. With this prior experience Miller decided to produce his own Gardeners Dictionary 1731 a work that rivaled Bailey's in size and covered all aspects of gardening in kitchen- and flower-garden orchard greenhouse and tree plantations together with descriptions of plants and essays on horticultural science'. Miller's Gardeners Dictionary 1731 was the first comprehensive garden dictionary in English and was written just before he became Curator of the Chelsea Physic Garden. It was the most influential gardening book of the 18th century with readership aimed at the gentry and their head gardeners clergy academics and fellow members of the Royal Society. Notes: Philip Miller FRS 1691 – 1771 was an English botanist and gardener of Scottish descent. Miller was chief gardener at the Chelsea Physic Garden for nearly 50 years from 1722 and wrote the highly popular The Gardeners Dictionary. Miller corresponded with other botanists and obtained plants from all over the world many of which he cultivated for the first time in England and is credited as their introducer. His knowledge of living plants for which he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society was unsurpassed in breadth in his lifetime. He trained William Aiton who later became head gardener at Kew and William Forsyth after whom Forsythia was named. The Duke of Bedford contracted him to supervise the pruning of fruit trees at Woburn Abbey and the care of his prized collection of American trees especially evergreens which were grown from seeds that on Miller's suggestion had been sent in barrels from Pennsylvania where they had been collected by John Bartram. Through a consortium of sixty subscribers 1733–66 the contents of Bartram's boxes introduced such American trees as Abies balsamea and Pinus rigida into English gardens. Miller was reluctant to use the new binomial nomenclature of Carl Linnaeus preferring the classifications of Joseph Pitton de Tournefort and John Ray at first. Linnaeus nevertheless applauded Miller's Gardeners Dictionary The conservative Scot actually retained a number of pre-Linnaean binomial signifiers discarded by Linnaeus but which have been retained by modern botanists. He only fully changed to the Linnaean system in the edition of The Gardeners Dictionary of 1768 though he had already described some genera such as Larix and Vanilla validly under the Linnaean system earlier in the fourth edition 1754. It describes how the student body voted to stop extracurricular activities such as the Junior "Prom" festivals etc. and devote the funds thus saved to the employment of expert teachers of certain practical courses to help the war effort. "GOUCHER The summer work committee of the War Council with the help of Mr. Merritt of the National Department of Agriculture are drawing up tentative plans for the summer farm. Goucher also had her garden last summer but this year the farm work is to be better organized and carried on a much larger scale. WELLESLEY About four hundred girls have signed up for spring work on the farm and over two thousand have put in their applications for work this summer. The student body has also pledged nearly a thousand dollars to finance the farm.
