This collection of plays were created to reconstruct the prejudiced narratives about African-Americans thus presenting them as "a maker of civilization in Africa a contributor to progress in Europe and a factor in the development of Greater America". Carter G. Woodson the author of the book's introduction asserts that "The publication of this book however must be considered another step of the Negro toward the emancipation of his mind from the slavery of the inferiority complex". The extremely rare self-published first book by this noted Arkansas poet who attained wide public recognition after his reading during President Bill Clinton's second inauguration. The book published when the author was 22 was printed in a small edition few of which survive - Worldcat records only two such copies. The text is entirely printed in green ink and this copy is signed by author in green ink on title page. He has also supplied a missing word by hand on page 6.
