Story of this Boston seafarer and captain of the ship Mercury who beginning in 1803 traded between Alaska China and illegally California. Foreigners were not allowed by the California Spanish government to trade in California. Eayrs was caught his ship and goods confiscated jailed and released after eleven months. He converted to Catholicism married and spent most of the next forty years in Guadalajara Mexico. All the while Eayrs wrote dozens of letters to the Mexican authorities in an attempt to gain compensation for his ship and cargo.
