1985126682London and Los Angeles: Big Time 1985. Original poster for the 1985 EP release.

Alex Chilton in 1985 all grown up and standing in an abandoned lot in New Orleans. After his "lost" years in Memphis and New York in the mid-late 1970s Alex Chilton moved to The Crescent City in the early 1980s working as a tree trimmer and a dishwasher playing often with Tav Falco's band The Panther Burns. In 1985 he took Falco's bass player Rene Coman an with new drummer Doug Garrison the trio toured intensely releasing this EP at the end of that year recorded at Ardent in Memphis with a sound much more cool and restrained than the raucous unhinged albums he had recorded in the 1970s. The EP featured a few Chilton originals and in a new move covers of songs original recorded by R&B artists Carla Thomas Slim Harpo and Willie Tee. This new R&B sound merged with Chilton's trademark primitivism would dominate the songwriter-guitarist's sound for the remainder of his career.

18.5 x 24 inches. Rolled. Fine. 19825422Cambridge: Harvard University Press 1982. 8vo. 6 3 blank vvi 4 2 blank 250 2 blank pp.

J. Hillis Miller here interprets seven English novels: Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë Henry Esmond by William Makepeace Thackeray Tess of the D'Urbervilles and The Well-Beloved by Thomas Hardy Lord Jim by Robert Conrad and Mrs. Dalloway and Between the Acts by Virginia Woolf. He "explores the multifarious ways in which repetition generates meaning in these novelsrepetition of images metaphors motifs; repetition on a larger scale of episodes characters plots; and repetition from one novel to another by the same or different authors. While repetition creates meanings it also Miller argues prevents the identification of a single determinable meaning for any of the novels; rather the patterns made by the various repetitive sequences offer alternative possibilities of meaning which are incompatible from the dust jacket. Uncut. Contemporary marbled paper boards expertly rebacked to style in tan calf spine gilt with raised bands. Housed in a slipcase.

A lovely set of the first edition of Miller's illustrated supplement to his overwhelmingly popular Gardeners Dictionary.

While conceived as a complement to an earlier publication Miller's Figures of . Plants "is a sufficiently complete work and may be rated on its own merits" Hunt. In the preface Miller stated his intention of publishing one figure of a plant for every known genus but abandoned this in favor of ".those Plants only which are either curious in themselves or may be useful in Trades Medicine &c. including the Figures of such new Plants as have not been noticed by any former Botanists." The plants illustrated were either engraved from drawings of specimens in the Chelsea Physic Garden or drawings supplied by Miller's numerous correspondents including John Bartram the Pennsylvania naturalist cf. plate 272 and Dr. William Houston who travelled widely in the Americas and West Indies and bequeathed Miller his papers drawings and herbarium cf. plates 44 and 182. For the plants drawn from examples in the Garden Miller employed Richard Lancake and two of the leading botanical artists and engravers of the period Georg Dionysius Ehret and Johann Sebastian Miller. Like Miller's Catalogus Plantarum many of the etched and engraved plates are delicately printed in colour i.e. green to give a more life-like impression after hand colouring. The work was published by subscription in 50 monthly parts with each part containing 6 plates between 25 March 1755 and 30 June 1760. Two later editions were published in 1771 and 1809. Complete sets of the first edition are scarce particularly in such lovely original condition.

Nissen BBI 1378; Great Flower Books p. 121; Dunthorne 209; Henrey 1097; Hunt 566; Stafleu and Cowen TL2 6059; Pritzel 6241.
