Number 884 each issue from the same set of only 1250 sets on Holland paper out of a total edition of 1279. IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS IN FINE CONDITION. "The Journal des Dames et des Modes lasted only two years the first issue appeared on 1 June 1912 and the last on 1 August 1914. This stylish periodical was issued regularly three times a month and ceased publication upon the outbreak of the First World War. With its expensive layout its society columns its poetic texts its colourful annotations and its fashion reports it represented the last brilliant refined impartial and aestheticizing impulse of a happy and optimistic society occupying the centre of the stage in the period that has aptly been called the 'belle époque'. It was essentially the testimony the history--illustrated or rather 'clothed' and narrated--of the customs ideas and ideals of a society and a period.<br /> <br /> "Every issue carefully reviewed all the current novelties of fashion and every issue carried coloured stencil prints reproducing the latest conceptions of the fashion designers." For the text "the magazine could count on the collaboration of the best known writers and littérateurs of the time" including Henri Duvernois Marcel Boulenger Paul Margueritte Jean Cocteau and many others. The artistic contributions "included the works of some outstanding artists and many promising young ones. Most frequent in his appearance and outstanding for the quality of his illustrations was Georges Barbier." Other artists included Léon Bakst Bernard Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi H. 1927005263Paris: Bloch and Meynial 1927. Limited First Edition. Heavy Wrappers. . Very Good Plus/Good. No. 185 of 275 copies. 4to. 32 by 24 cm. 25 tipped-in pochoir costume plates by Barbier. Lettered tissue guards. Colas 218. The artwork is all dated to the early post-World War One period into the early 1920s. Captured here is the fantasy spun by the costuming so at odds with the parsimonious theatrical zeitgeist of the present when it seems so much of classic theater and opera is willfully updated to the unglamorous present day. Not that the costumes here are entirely unrelated to the then contemporary styles -- one can discern the cross-fertilization of costuming with fashion effortlessly though through Barbier's fluent presentation. Barbier focuses on the escapist element of theater and his renderings usher us on this excursion. The plays represented include works by Rostand and Hugo among others. Original pictorial wrappers. Closed tear of joints by extremities with the longer tear at the base about 6 cm in length. Glassine dust jacket mostly intact but with several tears and chips especially by the lower portion of the rear cover and then by the spine extremities and neighboring joints. Frontis portrait of Barbier has flattened cornered crease. Otherwise the plates most importantly are very clean and bright. <br/><br/> Bloch and Meynial unknown books

Schirmer's Edition of Study Scores of Orchestral Works & Chamber Music No 32 title-page verso gives instrumentation information about first performances in Europe and the United States duration time; 97 pages full-score Opus 9 Schirmer plate number 40720 copyright 1943. This copy was signed inscribed and dated by Samuel Barber: "To my boss and friend Dan Saidenberg Samuel Barber June 1944". 26 cm. x 19 cm. The cover was de-acidified expertly conserved and mended and the book block was resewn. Now very good and a usable reading copy. A rare early inscription on an early work in the first edition to an important fellow musician when both men were in the U.S. Army. <br /><br /> Samuel Barber 1910 – 1981 was one of the most celebrated composers of the twentieth century. Barber was a triple prodigy in voice piano and composition entering the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia at age 14. Best remembered internationally for his hauntingly beautiful Adagio for Strings first championed by Arturo Toscanini his music has been used at times of national and international crisis to honor the dead and console the living. Who could ever forget Barber's music at Princess Grace's funeral The First Symphony dates from 1936 and bears the opus number 9 on the first page of the score. The first performance was by Bernardino Molinari and the Augusteo Orchestra in Rome December 13 1936. The first American performance was given by Arthur Rodzinski and the Cleveland Orchestra January 22 1937. Samuel Barber enjoyed the distinction for winning the Pulitzer Prize twice as well as distinguished commissions such as writing the opera for the opening of the new Metropolitan Opera House in 1966 <i>Anthony and Cleopatra</i>. In 1942 Barber joined the Army Air Corps. The dedicatee here is Daniel Saidenberg a violoncellist in the Philadelphia Orchestra starting in 1926 and in 1930 he was a 'cellist in the Chicago Symphony. Saidenberg was the first 'cellist to win the prestigious Walter W. Naumburg International Competition after which he pursued a solo career; and in later years he was a Manhattan gallery owner known for his sponsorship of faculty recitals at New York's Juilliard School. The text of the song is taken from a lyric by Agee that was first published in his first book Permit Me Voyage 1934 two years before the publication of Barber's signature work Adagio for Strings.
