"The Journal des Dames et des Modes lasted only two years the first issue appeared on 1 June 1912 and the last on 1 August 1914. This stylish periodical was issued regularly three times a month and ceased publication upon the outbreak of the First World War. With its expensive layout its society columns its poetic texts its colourful annotations and its fashion reports it represented the last brilliant refined impartial and aestheticizing impulse of a happy and optimistic society occupying the centre of the stage in the period that has aptly been called the 'belle époque'. It was essentially the testimony the history--illustrated or rather 'clothed' and narrated--of the customs ideas and ideals of a society and a period.

"Every issue carefully reviewed all the current novelties of fashion and every issue carried coloured stencil prints reproducing the latest conceptions of the fashion designers." For the text "the magazine could count on the collaboration of the best known writers and littérateurs of the time" including Henri Duvernois Marcel Boulenger Paul Margueritte Jean Cocteau and many others. The artistic contributions "included the works of some outstanding artists and many promising young ones. Most frequent in his appearance and outstanding for the quality of his illustrations was Georges Barbier." Other artists included Léon Bakst Bernard Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi H. Robert Dammy Paul Iribe Charles Martin and Fernand Siméon. Christina Nuzzi Parisian Fashion from the "Journal des Dames et des Modes". Note: all 186 plates are present numbered 1-184 with two unnumbered plates.

Paris: 1912-1914. 10127Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A fascinating and important collection of autograph letters and telegrams to the important American composer dating from the premieres of his two operas Vanessa 1958 and Antony and Cleopatra 1966. H. Auden Noel Coward and many others.
While Vanessa with libretto by Menotti won Barber the 1958 Pulitzer Prize for music Antony and Cleopatra written for the opening of the new Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center was not well-received. Franco Zeffirelli chosen to write the libretto and stage the opera weighed down the production with over-the-top scenery animals and extras; technical difficulties marred the opening night. As Barber departed New York for Italy the very next morning his years of success had for the most part come to an end. The 1966 letters to Barber reflect his unhappy state with many of his friends consoling him over the bad reviews and assuring him that his music transcended the problems of staging.
Included are:
88 telegrams sending best wishes and congratulations on the première of Vanessa in 1958 sent by W. H. Auden Noel Coward Aaron Copland Leonard Bernstein Jerome Robbins John Browning Frank O'Hara Stephen Spender Martha Graham Erich Leinsdorf Antal Dorati Andre Kostelanetz Regina Reznik "Your old Baroness" Roberta Peters G. Schirmer Lillian Gish Max Rudolf Samuel Chotzinoff the heads of ASCAP and NBC and many other luminaries and friends.
3 letters about Vanessa two ALS and one TLS dated January 1958. One from Roberta Peters celebrated Met coloratura thanking Barber for sending her some music mentioning that she is looking forward to learning Barber's song "Nuvoletta" and wishing him good luck for Vanessa 2 pp.; one from Eleanor Belmont a member of the Metropolitan Opera board congratulating Barber on the premiere 1 p.; and one from a music student William Gordon expressing his love for the opera and asking where he can obtain the score 1 p. typed and undated.
19 letters mostly autograph with one TLS to Barber from before and after the 1966 premiere of Antony and Cleopatra. One is from an Ada Camillo congratulating Barber on behalf of all Cadegliano Menotti's hometown in Lombardy. The other reads "Love the story hated the music I think you are an American disgrace. 1927005263Paris: Bloch and Meynial 1927. Limited First Edition. Heavy Wrappers. . Very Good Plus/Good. No. 185 of 275 copies. 4to. 32 by 24 cm. 25 tipped-in pochoir costume plates by Barbier. Lettered tissue guards. Colas 218. The artwork is all dated to the early post-World War One period into the early 1920s. Captured here is the fantasy spun by the costuming so at odds with the parsimonious theatrical zeitgeist of the present when it seems so much of classic theater and opera is willfully updated to the unglamorous present day. Not that the costumes here are entirely unrelated to the then contemporary styles -- one can discern the cross-fertilization of costuming with fashion effortlessly though through Barbier's fluent presentation. Barbier focuses on the escapist element of theater and his renderings usher us on this excursion. The plays represented include works by Rostand and Hugo among others. Original pictorial wrappers. Closed tear of joints by extremities with the longer tear at the base about 6 cm in length. Glassine dust jacket mostly intact but with several tears and chips especially by the lower portion of the rear cover and then by the spine extremities and neighboring joints. Frontis portrait of Barbier has flattened cornered crease. Otherwise the plates most importantly are very clean and bright.

Bloch and Meynial unknown books
4491A pair of stylized and detailed ensembles: an 18th century fantasy gown and hair style signed in full ca 1915; a winter outfit with fur trimmed jacket and long decorative skirt ca 1911. The fantasy costume drawing measures 10 3/8 x 8 7/8 inches. Condition: two marginal tears not affecting drawing and light foxing near the breaks. Tipped onto a mat and framed. Frame measures 15 x 17 inches. The winter outfit is drawn on cream toned art paper and is lighter than shown in the accompanying image. The drawing measures 11 x 8.5 and the frame measures 12 x 16 inches. Barbier considered one of the great illustrators of the early 20th century led a group of artists from the Beaux Arts School known for their flamboyance as much as their art. Barbier designed jewelry glass and wallpapers in addition to his costume and set designed for theater ballet and the Follies Bergére. His stylized design has become iconic. unknown books
1863List308N.p. 1863. Dark carved wood 11 ½ x 11 ½ x 1 inches with bone border and star inlays in corners an inlaid tree with carved names of Civil War battles as leaves. During the Civil War wounded or captured soldiers would often pass their time waiting to return to duty carving relics. The practice was fairly common with pipes being the most commonly carved object and the quality of the relics varied wildly depending on the talent of the soldier. A.H. Barber from Wisconsin was wounded at Antietam and most likely carved this memorial piece while recovering from his wounds. Each leaf notes a different battle during the 1861-1862 campaigns. Barber enlisted in Company C of the 2nd Wisconsin in 1861 and was discharged in 1863 following wounds suffered at Antietam. The trunk reads Battles for the Union and the four branches read Dept. of the South Army of Virginia & of the Potomac and Dept. of the West with twenty-nine leaves naming battles.

The resultant plaque is exceptional in timeliness craftsmanship and overall aesthetic beauty. Barber's metaphorically growing tree is particularly timely for the Union cause as the 1863 failure of the Maryland Campaign would serve as inspiration to Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Wonderfully preserved in excellent condition with no notable flaws. From the collection of Norm Flaydernman the noted Americana dealer who personally collected carved Civil War pipes and had been planning to write a book on the subject at the time of his death. unknown books

A rare early inscription on an early work in the first edition to an important fellow musician when both men were in the U.S. Army.

Samuel Barber 1910 – 1981 was one of the most celebrated composers of the twentieth century. Barber was a triple prodigy in voice piano and composition entering the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia at age 14. Best remembered internationally for his hauntingly beautiful Adagio for Strings first championed by Arturo Toscanini his music has been used at times of national and international crisis to honor the dead and console the living. Who could ever forget Barber's music at Princess Grace's funeral The First Symphony dates from 1936 and bears the opus number 9 on the first page of the score. The first performance was by Bernardino Molinari and the Augusteo Orchestra in Rome December 13 1936. The first American performance was given by Arthur Rodzinski and the Cleveland Orchestra January 22 1937. Samuel Barber enjoyed the distinction for winning the Pulitzer Prize twice as well as distinguished commissions such as writing the opera for the opening of the new Metropolitan Opera House in 1966 Anthony and Cleopatra. In 1942 Barber joined the Army Air Corps. The dedicatee here is Daniel Saidenberg a violoncellist in the Philadelphia Orchestra starting in 1926 and in 1930 he was a 'cellist in the Chicago Symphony. Saidenberg was the first 'cellist to win the prestigious Walter W. Naumburg International Competition after which he pursued a solo career; and in later years he was a Manhattan gallery owner known for his sponsorship of faculty recitals at New York's Juilliard School. Saidenberg died in 1997 at age 90. G. Schirmer, Inc. books
