Iambes is augmented with 3 unpublished poems and the collection Lazare appears for the first time. Contemporary half green Russian leather with corners. Smooth spine decorated with a large central decorative panel roll tool at foot. Gilt title and date. Rubbing to corners. Some pale foxing and browning. Very handsome copy. Les Iambes initially appeared in 1832 and remains the author's best-known collection which made him immediately famous and made him the spokesman for the July 1830 Revolution and one of the essential figures of Romanticism. ""This collection ranks him among the greatest combat poets between Agrippa d'Aubigné and Victor Hugo"" Laffont-Bompiani Dictionnaire des Oeuvres. Hugo said he found in Iambes ""astonishing verses that no one else will ever write again"" and Baudelaire that he was ""naturally a poet and a great poet."" The series of poems on social misery Lazare which completes the work is one of Barbier's greatest successes and makes the entire collection the most important published by the author in an inspiration that the poet for many critics would never surpass again. 18399394<p>This is a terrific condition antique Connecticut print framed and hand-colored. Original 1839 wood engraving by John Warner Barber. The engraving is titled "SOUTH VIEW OF NORWICH CITY CON." and is hand-colored. Wooden frame with a wire securely attached at the back for hanging. A highly attractive piece perfectly suitable for display. John Warner Barber was one of Connecticut's early historians a prolific engraver and author. He is best known for his vivid detailed chronicles of early 19th-century American life. Operating before the era of widespread photography he traveled extensively across the eastern United States to document townscapes landmarks and local history through meticulous wood and steel engravings. The frame measures 16 1/8" wide x 13 1/8" tall. Professionally framed by "Einhorn Galleries" in Connecticut per the label on the back.<br /><br />Condition:<br />The picture is in overall Near Fine condition and would make for an excellent display piece. The engraving is clean with no notable issues found. The frame is in terrific condition with no issues found. A wonderful display piece.</p>

Cover title: Barber's Illustrated Proverbs<br /> 12mo; 252pp; brown ribbed cloth blind-stamped decorative frame around a gilt-stamped title gilt lettering and vignette on spine; pale yellow endpapers ownership on ffep; five-panel leporello frontispiece; wood-engraved illustration at the beginning of each chapter; scuffing to boards with loss at head & tail of spine and corners foxing but clean and without odors; very good. Twenty illustrations appear on the five-panel frontispiece titled "The Proverbs of Solomon King of Israel." Four of the illustrations use proverbs to warn against alcohol fitting in with the Temperance social movement that was growing in strength at this time. One surprising illustration warning against evil has a couple surrounded by roses with the woman's breast exposed. Sixty-two illustrated chapters each with a traditional not biblical proverb a description of the illustration and an explanation of the wisdom. The end of each chapter lists many other common or simple conventional truths that relate to the one highlighted.<br /> <br /> A thought-provoking look at common cultural wisdom during the 19th century.
