Barbier ha anticipato di circa quindici anni la filosofia e le prestazioni della nuova i arrampicata libera e sportiva. Nell'estate del 1961, in un solo giorno, ha scalato in solitaria le cinque pareti nord delle Cime di Lavaredo. Fantascienza. Ma questo libro non si occupa tanto del fuoriclasse, quanto dell'uomo. Questo racconto è eccezionale perché dipinge un alpinista attraverso gli occhi della sua donna, Anna Lauwaert, descrivendolo non con il metro delle imprese ma con la misura dei sentimenti, dunque spogliandolo dei paramenti del campione e presentandolo nudo, disarmato, talvolta addirittura impresentabile.
