70580The Netherlands unknown firm ca. 1910. Various sizes. Height between 10 and 32 centimetres; five rolls each with a length of more than 5 metres 547 618 621 690 and 695 cm. Colour-printed and pochoir some with additional hand-colouring. = A nice varied collection of wallpapers in different sizes and styles some romantic e.g. with roses others extravagant with multiple colourful flowers and birds yet others with dazzling geometric patterns. Several are in the style of the "Amsterdamse School" a style transitional between Jugendstil and Art Deco. A few with some creases and folds but mostly in a good condition. All five are quite long and all could still be applied. Seven similar shorter rolls 21-297 cm added. An inspirational set. unknown

Edges slightly worn and frayed faint scattered stains on upper board; internally very good. § An annual French wallpaper sample book featuring “friezes rich papers and modern compositions†available until December 1929. A vast collection of the less expensive wall papers available from this distributor. Designs are mainly floral or botanical many friezes and tapestry patterns offering a glimpse of French interior design aesthetics that would have been accessible to a middle class homemaker. C. P. 18285945París France: Paulot & Carré 1828. Wallpaper broadside 45 x 51 cm. with seven-color woodcut black orange green blue white gray and brown. Printed on a brown paper coated with a pale blue pigment. The text states "Bonne double bierre" and the scene depicts four soldiers in uniform being waited on by a woman. She pours a seated soldier a drink while another stands with his hand draped around her shoulder. Two more soldiers share a smoke appearing to have had a few drinks already. Only the woman is clearly not enjoying herself. There are no identifying marks or labels on the broadside or on the matte but the stated publisher and date and the attribution to the printers Paulot & Carré are inferred by comparison with a print of the same series in the collection of the Museé du Papier Peint in Rexheim France. That print with the same text background color print colors and rough size depicts two women and a child seated under an arbor with a military officer enjoying a drink. Two exhibitions at Rixheim included that print; three similar prints were included in the groundbreaking exhibition by wallpaper collector and manufacturer Félix Follot Papiers peints à l'exposition universelle internationales de 1900 à Paris. Three similar prints were shown at the Exposition notice 156 "Deux affiches illustrées imprimées chez Paulot et Carré 1828-1830 Bière Cidre" and notice 158 "Affiche illustrée 'Bonne double bierre'" 1828. The two scenes described here were issued interchangeably with a number of texts including "Bonne Double Bierre" "Petite Biere" "Biere Cidre" and "Eau de Vie de Cognac". Unevenly cut with wide margins; affixed to modern matte with two small cloth hinges; one small cloth repair to verso. Some rubbing to surface of print and a bit of color loss to the face of one character and general light creasing. Still near very good. Rare. Félix Follot. Papers with various finishes of velvet matte and glossy including a few embossed or “Lincrusta†designs many are lightfast or washable. Designs of many different styles including: friezes botanical floral geometric wood grain tapestry patterns acanthus leaf scroll work cottage style marbled pebbled mosaic ceiling patterns et al. A fine set of three very large sheets 119 x 73 cm each with pochoir designs with flowers and birds for wallpaper or similar ornamental purposes. = A rare collection of very large original pochoir wallpaper artwork in Chinese style marked "P.D." Échantillons de papier peint. The pochoir process involves the application of gouache or watercolour pigments through the medium of stencils by which many different colours can be applied layer after layer to a single print. The patterns show an interesting variety in colour based on the same design. This is an early work of the French firm of Paul Dumas operative from 1906 to 1978 renowned for its high-quality wallpaper and wallpaper design. The designs are reminiscent of the work of Paul Poiret who worked for Dumas. Poiret 1879-1944 was a leading French fashion designer during the first two decades of the 20th century. His contributions to his field have been likened to Picasso's legacy in 20th-century art Wikipedia. In all this forms an extraordinary collection of practical design in pattern and coloration. A few small defects and skilful repairs yet largely in its original state and in a very good condition especially given the size and age. Yes this will look absolutely stunning above the couch. The colouring is vivid and bright: it must be seen! unknown

The collection reveals the visual themes and sentimental tropes important to Americans in the 1950s and proudly so as the introduction announces: “In developing the theme American Panorama for the new “Trend of the Times Wallpapers†Virginia Hamill in her special way brings to all Americans not just the obvious pictorial America but also some of the little things that have meant so much to most of us in our remembrances of pleasant happenings and sensations as we grew up. American ideas for American houses. as varied as the American scene.†“Virginia Hamill one of the first American women in the field of industrial design called herself a “decorative art consultant.†Under this broad title she gained prominence as an exhibition organizer and designer retail merchandiser product stylist and interior designer and educator.
