The author, a respected garden writer who restored his own Georgian garden, uses contemporary material to describe the gardens of 1730 to 1830, showing the changes of taste and the reasons for the changes. Together with the excellent illustrations, the work provides many ideas for garden design and an appreciation of landscaping of the period.

No other books so successfully combines the poetry of landscape with everyday practicalities of planning a unified garden with a unique character, filled with ideas and practical suggestions.
