Samizdat Handwritten Manuscript Notebook of Russian Silver Age Poetry. Tiflis early 20th century. 24 pp. ; 22.5 × 18 cm. Original softcover notebook from "Ivan Makh. Paper and Stationery Warehouse in Odessa". Manuscript. In Russian. This unique manuscript notebook dating from the early 20th century represents an authentic example of pre-revolutionary Russian samizdat self-publishing through manual copying. Created in Tiflis modern-day Tbilisi the notebook contains a curated selection of verses by prominent poets of the Silver Age meticulously transcribed by hand. Such artifacts were common among the intelligentsia of the Russian Empire's periphery serving as personal anthologies for forbidden rare or deeply personal poetry that was either difficult to obtain in printed form or held special sentimental value. The text provides a deep dive into the internal logic of private literary consumption including the arrangement of poems that often favored the Symbolist and Acmeist traditions reflecting the refined tastes of Tiflis's multicultural elite during the city’s cultural "Renaissance.". The physical medium of the collection is equally noteworthy: a commercial notebook produced by the renowned Ivan Makh Stationery Warehouse in Odessa a major supplier of paper goods across the southern Russian Empire. The juxtaposition of an Odessa-made commercial ledger with handwritten Tiflis poetry highlights the interconnected trade and cultural networks of the era. With 24 pages of handwritten text this notebook serves as a vital primary source for researchers of private reading habits and the dissemination of Silver Age literature outside the imperial capitals of St. Petersburg and Moscow. As a fragile one-of-a-kind object it captures the intimate tactile relationship between a reader and the "New Poetry" of the 1900s–1910s making it a highly significant acquisition for collectors of Russian manuscripts and Caucasian intellectual history.
