De naam stond synoniem voor luxe, kwaliteit en hoogstaande artisticiteit van Belgische origine. De firma Wolfers, producent van zilverwerk en juwelen, werd in 1850 in Brussel opgericht door Louis Wolfers. Vooral onder het beleid van zijn zonen Philippe, Max en Robert kon de zaak zich internationaal profileren en verwierf zij belangrijke afzetmarkten in West- en Midden-Europa. De objecten in art-nouveaustijl die door Philippe Wolfers werden ontworpen, waren het onderwerp van lofbetuigingen vanwege de belangrijkste kunstcritici. Zijn unieke art-nouveaujuwelen werden getoond in heel Europa en de naam van Philippe Wolfers evenaarde die van de Fransman Rene Lalique. Niemand minder dan Victor Horta ontwierp het schitterende winkelpand van de zaak, die daarmee haar ambities kracht bijzette. Daar waar voor veel kunstenaars de art-nouveauperiode een eindpunt betekende, wist Philippe Wolfers via de beeldhouwkunst op perfecte wijze te evolueren naar de art deco. Gioconda, het interieur met toebehoren dat hij ontwierp voor de internationale tentoonstelling van decoratieve kunsten in Parijs in 1925, werd legendarisch.Na het overlijden van Philippe in 1929 volgde zijn zoon Marcel hem op als artistiek directeur. Naast het nieuwe elan dat Marcel de onderneming van luxeproducten gaf, profileerde hij zich als een begenadigde beeldhouwer en een begaafde lakkunstenaar. Naar het voorbeeld van zijn vriend Jean Dunand blies hij deze eeuwenoude Aziatische techniek nieuw leven in.Dit rijkelijk geillustreerde boek is het resultaat van jarenlang onderzoek. The trailblazing companies of the field, Kalevala Koru, Kaunis Koru and Lapponia Jewelry, and their designers, have contributed in a variety of ways to the Finnish culture of jewellery, which also comprises unique works of art that are successful in international competition. Since 1960s, Finland has jewellery artists and designers that have broken with tradition and worked with different materials and forms in their search for their own approach. There are many jewellery artists, although their works appeal, for the time being to only a small group of experts. An interview with Helena and Lars Pahlman, who began to collect jewellery art or experimental jewellery in the 1970s in Finland, explores their interest in this pastime and illustrates their collection, of which one hundred examples chosen by them are presented.

From the latter half of the nineteenth century, Idar-Oberstein developed into an important centre of costume jewellery production. Numerous factories, large and small, produced costume jewellery for the world into the 1980s although today this trade has virtually lost its former significance. During that long time span, Idar-Oberstein was one of the four major German jewellery centres along with Pforzheim, Schwabisch Gmund and Hanau. Idar-Oberstein costume jewellery reflects each of the prevailing fashions in turn: Historicism, Jugendstil/Art Nouveau, Art Deco... to 1960s and 1970s Informel and Zero. Innovative handling of simple (inexpensive) materials soon led to an aesthetic that stood on its own merits, independently of -real- jewellery. Here the Bengel company - with its sophisticated Art Deco jewellery - exemplifies innovative models and business policy. The author was able to study many early documents and photographs in Idar-Oberstein archives as well as pieces of jewellery that, taken together, are highly instructive on the history of costume jewellery. A vivid image of twelve jewellery manufacturers is evoked; proprietors and employees, production conditions, models policy, pieces of jewellery in each period style and worldwide marketing and distribution. Costume jewellery from Idar-Oberstein was not usually marked (stamped) because it was sold through wholesalers; this is what makes attribution to specific makers quite difficult today. The present publication time-travels through a century of creative jewellery production in Idar-Oberstein, which has hitherto remained largely unexplored so that exciting discoveries are still to be made.
