Compaiono la descrizione del Cile di Cesare Famin pp. 99 con 24 tavole; la descrizione delle province del Rio della Plata (Paraguay, Uruguay, Buenos Aires) pp. 63 con 16 tavole; la descrizione della Patagonia, Terra del Fuoco e Isole Maluine pp. 92 con 16 tavole + cartina (mancano la tavola 1 e la 2). L'ultima parte, pero', di pp. 172 non e' 'Isole diverse dei tre oceani e regioni circompolari' di Bory di Saint Vincent come indicato nel frontespizio ma 'Possedimenti inglesi dell'America settentrionale' (senza tavole). Rispetto al frontespizio - che annuncia settantaquattro incisioni - mancano quindi le altre tavole che facevano parte del libro mancante.

Ce hanap en forme de chouette le plus ancien modèle anversois réalisé à partir d'une noix de coco que nous connaissons surprend par la maîtrise technique dont il témoigne. Il constituait sans doute une des pièces maîtresses d?une collection d?art ou d?un cabinet de curiosités. Ce chef-d??uvre, issu du siècle d?or, nous en dit long sur la vie à cette époque. Il témoigne de la richesse d?autrefois, de l?essor du port d?Anvers, de l?importation de produits exotiques et de l?artisanat de qualité en matière d?argenterie. On peut désormais admirer ce splendide objet d?art au DIVA à Anvers. Un maître anversois À côté du poinçon de l?orfèvre ? un pélican ? et le millésime 1548-1549, nous retrouvons sur l?objet la petite main si familière. Celle-ci rappelle la légende de Brabo qui trancha la main du géant Antigone et la jeta dans l?Escaut. Bien que nous ignorions le nom de l?artiste, nous savons ainsi avec certitude que ce hanap en forme de chouette provient d?Anvers. L?inscription ?Als alle fogels sin thoe neste, so is min flige beste? (Si tous les oiseaux dorment dans leur nid, je serai le meilleur en vol) réfère à d?anciens recueils de chants allemands et néerlandais. Le chant évoque l?amour que la chouette vouait au rossignol. Coupe à boire ou objet décoratif À la Renaissance, les hanaps en forme d?animaux réalisés dans les anciens Pays-Bas et dans les territoires germaniques étaient des objets tant fonctionnels que décoratifs. Ils étaient collectés par des amateurs d?objets exotiques et étaient étalés avec grande fierté sur des buffets ou dans des cabinets de curiosités ; ils étaient en outre utilisés dans certaines circonstances. La tête en argent de la chouette pouvait être dévissée et le liquide était versé dans le corps de l?oiseau. Il n?est cependant pas certain que l?on ait réellement bu dans la coupe anversoise. Une autre piste nous encourage à chercher l?origine de la chouette d?Anvers dans le système corporatif de la ville. Quelques références évoquent vers 1561 une chouette au sein de la guilde des carabiniers anversoise. Il se pourrait que les membres de cette guilde utilisaient de telles coupes à certaines occasions.

First edition, 4to (290 x 210 mm), [6], 22pp., Dawson Turner's Copy, 120 engravings on 116 sheets (complete), engraved title as plate one, 4 sheets having of two engravings, some occasional browning and spotting to plates, finely bound in contemporary full green morocco, lightly faded, joints rubbed, boards and spine decorated in gilt and blind, five double-raised bands, all edges gilt, a very handsome volume. The catalogue is dedicated to the art collection of Antoine Poullain, French art collector. It includes 120 engravings after paintings by Old Masters, from the collection of Poullain, among them Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Claude Lorrain, Gerrit Dou and many others, accompanied by short biographies of the artists. The engravings were engraved by different artists under the direction of the French engraver Pierre Fran?ois Basan. The collection of Antoine Poullain, documented in this catalogue, was sold at auction in Paris after his death in 1780. Many masterpieces from his collection are now in prominent museum collections. Provenance: From the library of Dawson Turner sold as lot 692, at the auction of his library on 9th March 1853, signed a dated by him on front fly-leaf, along with three notations: the first relating to the auction of the collection in 1780; the next concerns a Rembrandt from the collection being re-sold in London in 1814; and the third noting that plate 61 is included on plate 20 "This requires to be observed, or the book may be supposed incomplete".
