Lorenzi laureatosi all'Università di Padova nel 1897, fu docente a Bologna dal 1912 al 1915, e insegnò dal 1915 al 1948 all'Università di Padova materie geografiche; le sue ricerche in campo naturalistico e antropologico riguardarono soprattutto la limnologia, l'idrografia e la glaciologia. Quest'opera non è comune.

Napoleon en de juwelen van het keizerrijk Voor eer en glorie.

De Franse Revolutie (1789) leidde niet enkel tot het verdwijnen van de adellijke titels maar ze betekende ook het einde van de grote traditie van de Franse juweelkunst. De externe tekenen van rijkdom symboliseerden de monarchie, het hof en de aristocratische status en maakten op geen enkele manier deel uit van de revolutionaire idealen. Enkel al het bezitten van juwelen kon iemand naar de guillotine brengen. Onder het Directoire bleef soberheid de regel. Er ontstond een mode van militaire decoraties, ringen, broches en ijzeren armbanden, versierd met patriottische slogans en portretten van de helden van de revolutie. Onder het bewind van Napoleon (1799-1814) bloeide de sierkunst weer op en juwelen werden opnieuw aan het hof geintroduceerd. Napoleon had een zwak voor juwelen. Grote juweelhuizen zoals Nitot beleefden toen hun glorietijd. Juwelen en kleding hadden verschillende doelstellingen. Het waren politieke en diplomatieke instrumenten om vriend en vijand aan het keizerrijk te hechten, maar ze deden ook dienst als propaganda voor de grandeur van het keizerrijk en symboliseerden de macht van de keizer. Onder Napoleon kwam de empirestijl volop tot bloei. Toch is 'Napoleonstijl' niet volledig hetzelfde als 'empirestijl'. De kennis van de empirestijl maakt niettemin een beter begrip mogelijk van een hele reeks juwelen en hun zichtbare en/of symbolische betekenis.

I: viii, 96 hand-coloured plates with unpaginated accompanying text; Vol. II: 80 hand-coloured plates and accompanying text followed by 32 page index with an errata leaf, some light offsetting to text leaves, light spotting to endpapers, cont. calf, rubbed, rebacked, both vols., with a dark stain to base of spine, overall a clean and presentable set. Sir William Jackson Hooker (1785?1865), born and educated in Norwich, an inheritance gave him the means to travel and to devote himself to the study of natural history, particularly botany. He married Maria, the eldest daughter of the Norfolk banker Dawson Turner, in 1815, afterwards living in Halesworth for eleven years, where he established a herbarium that was renowned amongst botanists at the time. This is the rare large paper copy with all engravings hand-coloured, Hooker published more than twenty major botanical works over a period of fifty years, this being one of his scarcest works.
