Holland Day’s Copy with his monogram inscription written on front pastedown and the date Nov ‘13. Wonderful double-page title including frontispiece head- and tailpieces throughout all by Walter Crane. This is an excessively scarce book made more desirable by its ownership and the condition of the book which is fine; covers slightly age-toned the interior nearly as new. A striking survival indeed. The second edition issued in the same year as the first printing. These 1874 editions were both quartos a larger format than all subsequent editions. Blue cloth binding with bevelled board edges. Gilt illustration to front board. Wear to ends of spine and corners of boards. Heavy damp staining to rear board. Top page edge gilt. Slight browning and occasional light dust soiling to margins. A few occasional spots of foxing. Slight wrinkling to some of the photo mount pages. Complete with frontis and 23 further plates. Twenty of the plates are photographic including 12 Woodburytypes. A solid example of this landmark work. Overall condition is Good. Size: 9 x 11.25 inches 23 x 28.5 cm. John Murray hardcover

Full contemporary calf gilt-stamped lettering in second spine compartment 4 raised bands; two parts bound in one volume 8vo 185x142mm; pp. 14 274; 14 286; with separate title-page to second book 3 folding tables and numerous woodcut illustrations in text including mariner's compasses diagrams showing moon eclipses terrestrial spheres the solar system and more. Table at p. 229 appears to be a high-quality facsimile. Spine chipped and tips perished; some scuffing to boards. Light dampstaining to second book but overall internally nice and clean. <br/><br/>First edition of "the most important early geography written by an Englishman" Carpenter was the first to write on theoretical geography as distinuished from mathematical treatises on navigation or the repetition of narratives of travel. "The great merit of the treatise is Carpenter's blending of the solid part of the work of Aristotle and Ptolemy with that of the explorers and investigators of his own generation. He mentions the magnetical observation of Gilbert Wright Ridley and Norman and the cartographical improvements of Mercator and Wright" Rosenbach 19:110. California is mentioned as an island -- a fifth continent. "California heretofore supposed to be a parte of the Westerne Continent is since by a Spanish chart taken by the Hollanders found to be a great Iland" II:130. LIMITED EDITION of 140 copies designed and printed by Saul & Lillian Marks at the Plantin Press. Valtón owned thirty-nine pre-1600 broadsheets listed here by Ed Carpenter 1915-1995. This leaf book contains an original printed leaf from the first press in the New World. It is known that all copies of this edition differ some printed leaves being more desirable. The present specimen is a promissory note opening with the printed phrase "Sepan quantos estra carta vieren come yo . . ." translates closely to "Know by all men that this letter . . ." The accompanying essay describes that similar legal documents were among the first printed documents in Mexico. This was because certain legal phraseology allowed for a document to print the standard words needed and then add the necessary text in manuscript as with this specimen. Dr. Emilio Valtón was the first bibliographer to collect this extremely early and otherwise ignored form of printing in Spain. "Carta de pago" power of attorney. Gothic type. Approx. 9 x 12 ½ inches. 44 lines. Printed on one side. With a leading capital letter S followed by the phrase cited above "Sepan. . ." followed by seven lines of manuscript text. Then in printed form begins "Generalmente para a en todos mis pleytos causas ceuiles y criminal les mouidos y poz mouer que yo be y tengo con qual esquier personas y las tales y otras quale . . ." The verso also has a nine-line manuscript with elaborate signature. By inference this piece is attributed to Pedro Ocharte. See: Valtón Emilio.
