This edition enlarged with nearly 40 new pages to offer more illustrations from the smaller wood-cuts to full page illustrations some folding and new information. The author was an English physician invertebrate zoologist and physiologist. He wa voted Fellow of the Royal Society for his work. His most famous work was the Use and Abuse of Alcoholic Liquors in Health and Disease which was recognized as the first temperance book on the subject noting alcohol led to the disease of alcoholism. A very good copy bound in an earlier 20th century binding of 3/4 brown polished calf over marbled paper covered boards retaining original yellow endpapers with publisher's ads raised bands ruled in gilt lettering gilt internally free from foxing. Mary Carpenter 1807-1877 "was the leading female advocate of deprived and delinquent children in mid-nineteenth-century England and one of the first philanthropists to see the need to provide special facilities for their care. Her child-centred philosophy can be detected in remedial institutions and legislation from the 1850s onwards. As a writer she was maternal though unsentimental. As an administrator she was systematic and persuasive. Despite social indifference and conflicts with officialdom her record of achievement would have been the envy of many contemporary male reformers. she took the initiative in Bristol where she founded a school at Kingswood in 1852 and a separate reformatory school for girls at the Red Lodge in Park Row in 1854. Meanwhile she gave evidence before a parliamentary inquiry on juvenile delinquency 1852 and wrote Juvenile Delinquents their Condition and Treatment 1853. Her testimony writings and practical effort did much to bring pressure to bear on parliament to recognize a need for reform. The Youthful Offenders Act of 1854 'the Magna Carta of the neglected child' owed much to her influence. It authorized the establishment of reformatory schools by voluntary bodies certified by the state and partly funded by the Treasury. From 1830 to 1831 Carpenter published an unstamped series called "The Political Letters" challenging the stamp duty law as to whether any publication containing news was subject to duty. Carpenter did not feel that these should be subject to the duty. He was prosecuted and imprisoned from where he edited the "Political Magazine." <br/> The pamphlets contained are:<br/>1.
