Bottom edge trimmed about 3/8 of an inch resulting in his name being abbreviated to 'penter'. Some edgewear to top edge but not visible as matted. An intriguing imageCharles Carpenter 1869-1949 worked as the photographer for Chicago's Field Museum between 1899 and 1947. During his time there he participated in several excursions. His last trip sent him to the St. Louis World's Fair 1904 where he produced 3000 negatives of American Indians. Carpenter and Curtis both liked to stage their images and such is the case here. Original typescript with frequent revisions and alterations throughout in pencil and occasionally in ink with a few inserts in carbon typescript. Punched and enclosed in leatherette binder. Generally very good to fine. An original working typescript for this evidently unproduced musical adaptation with text and lyrics by Rosen to be accompanied by music by Carleton Carpenter. The undertaking was quite ambitious and this draft stems from a point of ongoing substantive revision. Evidently plans proceeded to a further stage as tipped in front is a clipping from an unidentified trade paper indicating that Cyril Ritchard had been signed for the lead and negotiations were ongoing for a Broadway run produced by Kermit Bloomgarden. However IBDB records no such production though Rosen's and Carpenter's other Broadway accomplishments are represented. Rosen is there credited with staging the 1938-9 WPA Production of Shaw's ANDROCLES AND THE LION at the Lafayette Theatre in New York which ran 104 performances and featured an all African American cast. hardcover books

In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with light wear and foxing paperclip impression to front panel.<br /> <br /> <p>One of the American anthropologist's major works the inspiration for a 2003 documentary by the same name. A photo-illustrated examination of media technology myth and meaning across cultures inspired by a quote from Don Quixote. Carpenter writes "I think media are so powerful they swallow cultures. I think of them as invisible environments which surround and destroy old environments." To illustrate this point the cover images show Zuni Katchina figurines from 1890 and 1950 the latter clearly a version of Mickey Mouse. The author spent his career studying media ecology and cofounded the iconoclastic academic journal Explorations with the Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan. Holt, Rhinehart and Winston unknown
