Wrappers toned with moderate wear and soil corners gently bumped a very good copy. A single but notable issue from this influential and important digest which was the foundation of the Johnson Publishing empire. In addition to excerpting articles by and about African-Americans from other publications there was also much original content written expressly for the magazine. <br /> <br /> This issue is especially notable for printing the articles "Love or Babies: Must Negro Mothers Choose" by Margaret Sanger; "condensations" from Mbonue Ojike's My Africa and Erskine Caldwell's In the Uplands; and war correspondent W. Randy Dixon's article on Black WWII hero Corporal Waverly Woodson Jr.; and David O. Selznick's "Negro Lobby in Hollywood." The monthly article "If I Were A Negro" was penned by author and activist Fannie Cook and titled "An Atomic Approach to Racism." An important magazine; early issues are uncommon. Approximately 13 ½ x 10 ½ inches. Several small edge tears and light wear to margins; good to very good overall. An early sheet music publication from the African American musical Bandanna Land the 1908 stage production starring the celebrated comedy team Bert Williams and George Walker two of the most influential Black performers in American theater at the turn of the twentieth century. The cover illustration depicts a figure gesturing across a map of the United States accompanied by the bold title “Any Old Place in Yankee Land Is Good Enough for Me†while an inset photograph identifies “The Robinson Trio†a Black vaudeville act likely consisting of James B. Robinson Stella Wiley and Dan Michael. <br /> <br /> The music was written collaboratively by two major African American composers of the ragtime era. Will Marion Cook 1869–1944 a classically trained violinist and composer who studied at the Oberlin Conservatory and later in Berlin was one of the most important musical figures in early Black musical theater. He worked closely with Williams and Walker on several productions and helped develop a distinctive style that blended ragtime rhythms with elements of operetta and popular song. Co-composer Chris Smith 1879–1949 best known for the widely popular dance song “Ballin’ the Jack†was another prominent Black songwriter associated with early twentieth-century musical theater and vaudeville. The lyrics were written by Alex Rogers 1876–1930 one of the most prolific African American lyricists of the period and a frequent collaborator with Cook. Of the handful of copies of this sheet we have been able to locate this is the only one we found with the Robinson Trio inset. Gotham-Attucks Music Co unknown

Peculiar ink inscription reads “Culprints Doc Wedge and Shorty†at margin. Very Good. An early Chinese American restaurant menu from Danville Illinois. The business is listed in the 1913 International Chinese Business Directory of the World making the restaurant one of fewer than would exist when immigration laws changed in 1915 allowing restaurateurs to enter the United States on work visas. The menu features two sections “American Style†and “Chinese Style†with the latter section including dishes such as Chop Suey Chicken Sum Soo Noodles Wor Canton Style Eggs Fried Rice and a selection of teas. The existence of a separate American menu attests to the development of American Chinese food alongside American food and the degree to which restaurants offered Chinese immigrants an opportunity to operate businesses for broader American clientele. We find records of the Mandarin Cafe’s existence into the 1940s. unknown

The chain quickly spread across the United States with 335 locations across the country in 1964. Colour-decorated limp covers striking Art Deco cover art lettering in red white blue & silver on English racing green field wire spiral binding as issued NF copy. First edition of this scarce promotional catalogue touting the storied English Racing Automobiles Ltd. E.R.A. founded in Nov. 1933 and manufactured 18 single seater racing cars capable of competing against most major race car manufacturers in motorsports at the time. The E.R.A.’s used 1.1 liter 1.5 liter and 2 liter supercharged engines competing in the Voiturette classes and were particularly designed for hill climbs and won many “Small Car†races. Of the original 18 ever built 17 still survive today although many have been heavily modified and experienced changes to blowers suspension brakes and styling to remain on the cutting edge. Their efforts were rewarded in 1935 by placing 1st 3rd 4th & 5th at the prestigious Nurburgring “Voiturette†class race in 1935. No original copies in Worldcat.
