Ray Alderson himself was just 20 when he was billed as the youngest maestro in the Midwest-- his dance band travelled on the bus to small towns across Iowa Nebraska & Texas. 1940-41 Trombonist's Album/Scrapbook captures the era of America's big bands -- there are 150 b&w snapshots and lots of ephemera-- letters telegrams postmarked envelopes sent to and from Wibby Fisher and his folks in Iowa. Wibby writes them about his excitement exhaustion efforts to find a better-paying job but not having much money. Handwritten schedule lists dates & towns the Ray Alderson Orchestra were to play written specifically for Wibby's folks to know where to send letters-- virtually every nite is scheduled with only occasional off-days. The band was to play a 3-month gig in 1941 on the SS President a luxury Mississippi riverboat in New Orleans. Their final gig in 1941 was a brief trip to Monterrey Mexico. Trombonist's Scrapbook/Photo-Album-- in very good condition 9"x12" spiral bound completely intact. Covers are bright & clean. Hardcover bound in pictorial light brown cloth titled in gilt on the front cover and the spine with a color caricature illustration of an African-American girl on the front cover. The covers are bumped rubbed and slightly soiled. 100 pages with the text in dialect illustrated with 14 full-page plates and numerous vignettes of African-Americans by Clifford K. Berryman in the caricature style of the period. The text block is cracked plate 87 is detached pages 33/34 are misbound after page 36 and several of the signatures i.e. group of pages are pulled. Engraved portrait frontispiece. Front flyleaf with pencilled inscription identifying binder by her maiden and married names. Tidcombe "Women Binders" p. 170 Plate 44. Spine just slightly and evenly sunned one corner gently bumped but a fine copy clean and fresh internally in a shining binding with virtually no wear.<br/> <br/> This attractive edition of the complete works of the beloved poet laureate comes in a lovely binding by Alice Pattinson who trained with the great Douglas Cockerell. She took over his premises when he moved out of London in 1902 and hired forwarder Elsé Hoffmann and finisher George Fisher who presumably did the finishing here to Pattinson's design. Formerly of Riviere and one of the best at his craft in England Fisher would later spend more than two decades as the chief binder at the Gregynog Press in Wales. According to Tidcombe Pattinson's work was done "to a very high standard" and her bindings were pictured in "Art Workers Quarterly" "Art Journal" and "The Art of the Book." She was a regular exhibitor at the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society's events and also exhibited in Leipzig and Frankfurt. Macmillan and Co unknown

Volume 1 nos. 1-5; Volume 2 nos. 1-5; Volume 3 nos. 1-5. 3 illustrated volumes complete each volume about 80pp bound into quarter or full cloth 8vo's and in very good condition with light wear to extremities and some of the hinges. Mild ex-library with canceled stamps on the last page of each bound volume no other evident markings though there is an unrelated bookplate to each front pastedown. Each volume is protected with a mylar wrapper. Volumes 2 & 3 are signed on the front flyleaf by Howard A. Marple a contributor and director of public relations at Fisher and most likely the editor of these volumes. In the later 1940s Marple held a similar position at Monsanto much in the news recently for their genetic modification of vegetables. Fisher Scientific hardcover
