"</em></strong></p><p>4 1008 pages 6 unnumbered leaves of plates one of them in color: illustrated colored frontispiece with a detailed kitchen scene and hand colored salad arrangements below.</p><p>Probably the most popular nineteenth-century Mexican cookbook. This edition was preceded by an 1845 edition done in Mexico by Cumplido with a slight title variation. This is considered the true first edition. Rare cornerstone work.</p><p><strong><u>Bibliographical "mystery"</u></strong><u>:</u> Both Palau 196443 and OCLC describe this work with a different title "<em>Nuevo Cocinero Mexicano</em>" but with the same publisher pagination and illustrations as ours. As later editions changed the title to "<em>Nuevo Cocinero Americano</em>" this might be a unique copy or a proof title page of the first edition with the "new" title that the publisher planned to use in later editions.</p><p>As Dan Strehl says in the introduction to Encarnación's Kitchen: "<em>In Mexico the printing of cookbooks began in the 1830s with large comprehensive books authored mostly by men. By that time Mexico possessed a highly evolved cuisine combining distinctive Spanish Indian and French influences. This is documented in the first cookbook printed in Mexico in 1831 El cocinero mexicano. El Cocinero mexicano has had a remarkably long and important life in Mexican culinary literature. In 1845 the 1834 edition was rearranged in alphabetical order by Mariano Galván Rivera and published throughout the nineteenth century with reprints through the twentieth century</em>"</p><p>The editor of this edition reviews the history of this cookbook and others and explains the rationale for the present edition. He states that over 3000 copies of his own cookbook have been sold since it first appeared in 1831 in addition to the many others both produced domestically and imported from abroad. He further remarks that he has thoroughly edited the text removing some unpopular recipes and adding others especially in light of the fact that "<em>la cocina francesa ha invadido nuestros comedores</em>" thereby making Mexican cooking more cosmopolitan. In recipe revisions or new introductions however the recipes have been suited to Mexican tastes and ingredients.</p><p>The publisher also remarks specifically on the lithographs which he remarks have been included to clarify points and demonstrate how things are actually done. Finally he observes that he has kept the price low so that the book is "<em>al alcance aun de las personas de poca fortuna</em>." Light toning to the paper. <br /> <br /> From wikipedia: Daniel McCook June 20 1798 – July 21 1863 was an attorney and an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War. He was one of two Ohio brothers who along with 13 of their sons became widely known as the “Fighting McCooks†for their contributions to the war effort.12.With the outbreak of the Civil War McCook although 63 years old volunteered his services to the Union. He was commissioned as a major and paymaster. When Confederate Brig. Gen. John H. Morgan led his troops through southern Ohio during Morgan's Raid Major McCook joined in the advance of the Union pursuit. Early in the morning of July 19 1863 Federal troops attacked Morgan at Buffington Island where the Confederates were planning to cross the Ohio River back into Western Virginia. McCook was shot and mortally wounded. He died two days later and his body was buried with full military honors in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati Ohio.5. n/a unknown

A VG copy which has has had what was left of the original spine laid down onto a replaced blue spine by a former owner. Some foxing to the early and late pages of the book but overall clean and tidy inside. Mild wear to the extremities and minor marks to the boards in places. NB: The book provides menus of 5 or 6 courses for each day of the year starting with January 1st and including a menu even for February 29th. Beneath each daily menu are the 2 or three recipes written in the brief style of older cookbooks. 1847002142Providence: Knowles & Vose 1847. Ichabod Cook 1779-1851 wrote this book to address the doctrinal differences between the Society of Friends and other Christian sects. Judging by his Introduction he was under attack for his positions. This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Edition. Cook wrote two other books; all are uncommon today. Marbled paper-covered boards with a leather spine ruled; black spine label with gilt lettering. The text is superb: clean bright and supple; 171 pages with an errata page. The covers show some wear and the front of the spine has a split but everything is holding nicely. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good Plus/No Jacket. Cooke's version is after an engraving from a drawing by John Webber in 1779 from "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean." Captain James Cook 1782 - 1779 made three voyages to the Pacific and encountered Pacific cultures for the first time but also brought back to Europe the first large-scale collection of Pacific objects. John Webber was the artist on Cook's third voyage 1776-1780. This image most likely is part of a ceremony when Cook was greeted in Hawaii. From "Scenery of the East India Islands Etc." In the mid-1850s Cook began to read works by John Ruskin and associated with a group of American artists writers and architects who followed Ruskin's thinking. Through this group he became aware of the British Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. A woman possibly Moll's bawd and possibly the landlady rifles Moll's possessions for what she wishes to take away while Moll's maid tries to stop the looting and arguing.
