First edition of this nicely chromolithographed advertising souvenir folding trade card handed out by Washburn Crosby & Co. flour mills at the 1893 Columbian Exposition where they again won a gold medal for their “Superlative Flour.†Image shows sacks of flour being shipped across the Great Lakes with Columbia seated above illustration of gold medal ribbons on recto. Washburn 1818-1882 built his first flour mill in Minneapolis MN in 1866 with a capacity of 840 barrels per day but after fire and setbacks had erected a huge new mill in 1880 with state-of-the-art machinery which produced “Gold Medal†winning flour. First edition thus of this promotional souvenir menu for the famed and beloved seafood restaurant first founded in 1938 by Ivar Haglund 1905-1985 alongside his longtime Aquarium tourist attraction. Although undated this menu includes mention of his popular “Clam Digger Room†cocktail lounge as well as his short-lived “Sravi†gift store opened in 1961 just prior to the opening of the 1962 Century 21 Seattle World’s Fair. Specialties included the beloved clam chowder Dungeness Crab Louie whole cracked crabs and even Wente Bros. and B.V. California wines for purchase. Of special interest are the chapters on winemaking such as Champagne and Elderberry Wine as well as beers mead and cordials. Also addressed are a myriad of ways to preserve foods without refrigeration in high heat and for months -- some of which are remotely questionable. The work closes with some patent medicine and quackery recipes including the historic Marseille Remedy or Thieves’ Oil supposedly a mixture to fight the plague and featuring vinegars with herbs spices garlic essential oils and more. First edition of this very scarce and informative handbook for librarians attending the 37th Convention in Berkeley CA the year of the 1915 PPIE in San Francisco. Advice on transportation is detailed on the trains and electric railways and ferries leaving East Bay to San Francisco along with detailed instructions on where to eat at the Exposition. One of the favorite recommendations was the Yellowstone Park Concession which served a la carte meals at Railroad prices such as the Old Faithful Inn and featured an 80 piece orchestra. High Class French German Italian Greek Spanish Mexican Hungarian and Chinese & Japanese restaurants all feature in the San Francisco listings. No copies in Worldcat.
