24977One item from 1777 from Bounty Hall Estate Jamaica; three items from London 1800 and 1801; fourteen items from New York Lewis Simond & Co. 1803 and 1804. All 18 items are in very good condition with slight signs of age and wear. Items One and Eighteen are letters Eighteen being a ‘triplicate’ the other sixteen items are accounts with items Five to Eighteen relating to the firm of the New York merchant Lewis Simond. Items Seven Nine and Twelve are copies i.e. written out afresh but containing the same text of Items Six Eight and Eleven. ONE: Henry Hough overseer of the Bounty Hall estate Jamaica to ‘William Fairclough / Green Park’: Autograph Letter Signed. 22 The eighteen documents in this collection provide an interesting insight into the dealings of a substantial West Indian merchant: the owner of the extensive Jamaican sugar and rum plantation Green Park slave owner and slave trader. Green Park Estate was one of the largest and oldest sugar plantations in Trelawny Parish Jamaica dating back to a grant of land from Oliver Cromwell to James Bradshaw son of the regicide John Bradshaw. It was bequeathed to William Atherton the principal party in the present documents by William Kennion per his will of 1764. Atherton extended the estate to around over 1300 acres building a fortress and a second sugar mill so that it ranked as the third largest of the 88 estates in Trelawny Parish. The first item is a letter written from the overseer of a neighbouring estate Bounty Hall regarding the settling of a bill. In the next three items we see Atherton purchasing silver lace from a London tradesman and settling other bills through his bank Glynn’s. The last fourteen item centre on the New York firm of merchants Lewis Simond & Co who arrange the transportation of wood for the construction of casks for the rum produced at Green Park Item Five provides a current account between the firm and the Green Park Estate. Despite the fact that Atherton is estimated to have owned around eight hundred slaves in the last item we see him quibbling over eighteen cents. November 1777 Bounty Hall. Docketed: ‘Bounty Hall 22d. Original printed softcovers minor chipping head & foot of spine slight chipping couple lower corners dustsoiling still a VG bright copy. First edition of one of the earliest American studies on Chinese Sugarcane Sorghum and the possibilities that this was the sorghum plant that American farmers hoped would grow in the Northern United States and definitive work on growing harvesting and distilling sorghum. A variety of “Chinese Sugarcane†was imported by Father Du Halde from Sichuan China in 1851 where it was quickly adopted also under the name of “Northern Chinese or Shanghai Sugarcane†as a crop to provide sugars for alcoholic products filling the void left by the grape crop failure in the 1850s. Chinese Sugarcane seeds were first brought into United States by Jay Browne Esq. in 1854 and a few intrepid American nurseries began planting and determining if it could be planted and harvested profitably in the North. Hyde writes that in his test crop he was able to secure a dark sugar from the cane molasses and notes that it will be of tremendous value in producing alcohol and confectionaries and that the Sorghum remnants could be fed to livestock. Hyde 1825-1898 worked with his father James Hyde in developing the very successful nursery emphasizing fruit trees ornamental trees and cash crops. He was a pioneering environmentalist who founded the first improvement society in the United States the Newton Centre Tree Club whose purpose was to emphasize beautifying the roads and commons in Massachusetts. He was Newton MA first mayor after the city was incorporated in 1873 and was also successful in persuading the Boston & Albany RR to acquire the existing single-track line of the Charles River Railroad to aid his nursery business. Original editions of this work have become quite scarce in the trade. Frame with some aging but the image is bright and clear. Likely hung in a C & H office. Very good. The photograph shows the company's very long pier its seven story refinery and the Hotel Crockett with an arm of the San Francisco Bay in the background. The California and Hawaiian Sugar Company was founded in 1906 and operated from 1921 to 1993 as an agricultural cooperative marketing association owned by the member sugar companies in Hawaii. Its headquarters are and were in Crockett under the Carquinez Bridge in unincorporated Contra Costa County California. In 2017 its Crockett refinery processed its last shipment of Hawaiian sugar but continues to produce pure cane sugar sourced from other locations. American Sugar Refining bought C & H in 2006. The surrounding hillsides are absolutely devoid of any homes or other structures. The jpeg shows reflections not on the actual image. N.p. unknown

1748WRCAM27927London: M. Cooper 1748. 21pp. Dbd. Internally clean and fresh. Very good. From the establishment of the sugar colonies in the 17th century taxation on exports and imports to and from the colonies was a matter of continuous debate in Parliament. Enter less expensive French sugar particularly for distillation purposes in New England and questions of appropriate duties reach a fervor in the 1730s in part resulting in the Molasses Act of 1733. Colonial merchants ignored the Molasses Act almost universally perpetuating the discussion of how to best garner revenue from the colonies made more timely by the depleted funds of Britain's exchequer at the close of King George's War in 1748. Preceding the infamous Sugar Act by seventeen years this pamphlet represents yet another voice in the crescendoing sugar tax discourse. SABIN 68280. KRESS S3804. HANSON 6182. GOLDSMITHS 8353.
