Dal 1948 direttore del reparto siberiano dell'Istituto di citologia e genetica dell'Accademia delle Scienze dell'URSS, nel 1966 fu nominato direttore dell'Istituto di genetica generale dell'Accademia. Fu uno dei primi a occuparsi di genetica evoluzionistica, dal 1930 al 1946, con ricerche sulla frequenza delle mutazioni letali e subletali in diverse popolazioni naturali di Drosophila melanogaster, e sulla struttura genetica delle popolazioni come base dei processi evoluzionistici. Studiò anche l'effetto di posizione dei geni. Alcuni suoi libri sono stati tradotti in italiano: La genetica e il futuro dell'uomo (1973), Genetica generale (1976).
