Davide Lajolo (Vinchio, 29 luglio 1912, Milano, 21 giugno 1984) è stato uno scrittore, politico e giornalista italiano. Il romanzo autobiografico di Lajolo, pubblicato nel 1945, fu scritto in fretta, con le ferite della guerra partigiana ancora vive nella carne e nell'anima. Il protagonista “Ulisse” il 25 luglio 1943 è ancora un fascista, ma è disgustato e sfiduciato dallo spettacolo di corruzione e vigliaccheria offerto dal regime. Dopo l’ 8 settembre, anche lui, ufficiale dell’esercito, non può stare dalla parte dei tedeschi e trova altri giovani che non vogliono più partire. Bisogna organizzarsi, nascondersi, cercare collegamenti e entrare nelle file del movimento partigiano. Ulisse, per il suo passato di fascista, è sospettato, diffidato e comprende che la fiducia bisogna conquistarsela. E’ accolto nelle file del movimento garibaldino assieme ai giovani di Vinchio, suo paese di origine. Tra i partigiani accorrono volontari uomini di tutte le condizioni sociali, non ci sono solo i giovani più coraggiosi e spavaldi, ci sono soprattutto i lavoratori. La lotta partigiana non è guerra di difesa del territorio, è guerra di movimento, di puntate, di sganciamenti. Quindi Ulisse, con il suo gruppo, in contatto con altre formazioni, si muove per affrontare gli avversari nel Monferrato tra Vinchio, Mombercelli, Cortiglione, Nizza e Canelli. Dopo l’estate vittoriosa del 1944 segue un inverno terribile di freddo e di fame, il rastrellamento del 2 dicembre, le rappresaglie sulla popolazione inerme. I partigiani vivono nascosti scappando di tana in tana e resistono grazie all'aiuto dei contadini. Ulisse rischia per andare a salutare la sua bambina: deve trovare un motivo in più per continuare nella lotta che riprende nel marzo 1945 per contrastare il grande assalto di nazisti e fascisti che si snoda da Asti, Nizza, Canelli, Alessandria.
