Mussolini nel 1910 viene mandato dal suo partito, il partito Socialista, a Trento ad aiutare Cesare Battisti, direttore del quotidiano socialista locale “Il popolo di Trento”. Durante quel soggiorno Mussolini si documenta sulla storia di Trento e sul suo Principato. Lo interessa la dinastia dei Madruzzo, stirpe di Signori locali che ebbe il potere su Trento e il Trentino da metà Cinquecento a metà Seicento. In particolare lo interessa la storia dell’ultimo esponente, il cardinale Emanuele Madruzzo e della sua amante Claudia Particella. Ne scaturisce quindi un romanzo storico, con personaggi, situazioni e riferimenti veramente esistiti e reali. Il romanzo viene pubblicato a puntate su “Il Popolo di Trento” nel primo semestre del 1910 e ha tutte le caratteristiche del romanzo d'appendice, con situazioni che avvincono il lettore e lo inducono ad aspettare la puntata successiva. Un Mussolini inedito, o almeno ben poco conosciuto, quello che qui si presenta in veste di narratore: si tratta di un romanzo "d'appendice" - Claudia Particella. L'amante del Cardinale - apparso a puntate, dal 20 gennaio all'11 maggio 1910, sul giornale socialista «Il Popolo», fondato a Trento da Cesare Battisti. Imperniato su una vicenda storica realmente accaduta nel Seicento - lo "scandaloso" amore del vescovo-principe di Trento, Carlo Emanuele Madruzzo, per la bella «cortigiana» Claudia Particella -, il romanzo ricorre con scaltrito mestiere a tutte le "classiche" armi del feuilleton, mescolando abilmente horror e macabro, passioni e perversioni, delitti e torbide pulsioni erotiche. Il testo, godibile e pressoché introvabile, risulta importante in quanto documenta le idee politiche del giovane autore, all'epoca socialista e rivoluzionario, con venature marxiste e anarchiche, nonché decisamente anticlericale.
