197016443JCulver City: Metro-Golwyn-Mayer Studios 1970s. The original "Myrna Loy Building" metal sign from the M.G.M. Hollywood Studio lot. In the 1970s the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio started naming various buildings after their classic film stars. Myrna Loy was alive and well at the time of the naming of her building. This sign was acquired by a gentleman who worked as a carpenter on the lot for many years. His accompanying letter reads: During the middle 1980's 85 to 89 I Michael McGovern worked at the old M.G.M. lot Studios in Culver City California in the Permanent Construction Dept. The lot was sold several times in this time frame. At one point before the now Sony Studios it was owned and named Lorimar Telepictues. When the lot was Lorimar Telepictures they were painting and changing the M.G.M. lot to the new Lorimar "look." Thus the signs Blue and Gold naming the building after the old M.G.M. stars were taken down and replaced with the new signs brown and white that matched the Lorimar colors. I asked my boss if it was OK to keep the signs I changed and he said it was fine with him. Myrna Loy is best known for her portrayal of "Nora Charles" in six Thin Man films with William Powell of the 1930s but also starred in Manhattan Melodrama Libeled Lady Test Pilot The Best Years of our Lives Cheaper by the Dozen and From the Terrace. Her film career spanned more than 50 years Accompanied by a copy of Mr. McGovern's "Prop Maker" ID card. The sign measures 18 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches and presents with some obvious wear from the elements like extremely small areas of rust and signs of use overall in excellent condition. Today the studio lot is owned by Sony and it houses both Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures. The Myrna Loy Building which was the old MGM sound department exists and it still proudly bears her name. Metro-Golwyn-Mayer Studios unknown

189093665New York: McLoughlin Bro's 1890. Unbound. Original vintage puzzle. 49 colored cardboard pieces in original box approximately 13 x 8.75". The puzzle put together measures approximately 19.5 x 11.75". Missing one piece otherwise in fine condition in the original box which has very minor wear.

Nineteenth century puzzles were cut by hand from solid wood or a thin veneer on press board with coping saws treadle scroll saws and if the material was thin enough by slicing with a very sharp knife. The limitations of materials and equipment kept the pieces large the knobs if any large and the cutting simple usually straight or crooked lines. The market was primarily for children as learning tools maps tables of monarchs history morality lessons bible proverbs fables and by the second half of the nineteenth century simple family entertainment national achievements technology. McLoughlin Brothers a leading lithographer in New York City cut many of their prints into simple puzzles using large square knob cut for edges to hold the puzzle together with straight line cut pieces for the interior.

This puzzle exemplifies this particular style with the knobby pieces making up the borders and with plain square cut pieces making up the middle.
