Divenne successivamente insegnante d'inglese al Carnegie Institute of Technology, poi successivamente conosciuta come Carnegie Mellon University. Le sue pubblicazioni includono Interlinear to Cabeza de Vaca (1936), The grist (1945), Notes for a new mitologia (1926) e Malinche (Dona Marina) (1939). Malinche is the story of a slave girl who served as Cortes's translator during his conquest of Mexico. Long's gifts as a poet bring a magical quality to the telling of her story. Malinche comes to embody the image of the ideal woman that all men carry in their hearts.
