Includes the long list of subscribers but not the rare ad leaf. Bound with half-title. This has the variant reading "vous" p. 150. The printed date "MDCCLXVIII" appears at the foot of the title page. However even though there is no certain internal evidence this is probably a 19th century facsimile reprint. In his book THE LIFE AND TIMES OF LAURENCE STERNE p. 604 Wilbur Cross identifies a De Vinne Press facsimile reprint limited to 100 copies that was published in 1885. On the front free endpaper of this copy is the signature "D. L. De Vinne 1885" probably of the De Vinne Press. Hardcover. 4.25" wide by 7" tall. Bound in the original pale yellow cloth. A series of major prosecutions targets leading Jesuits and Catholic laymen Whitebread Harcourt Fenwick Langhorn and later Wakeman with three Benedictine monks accused of conspiring to kill the King. These trials form the core of the Popish Plot prosecutions driven by informer testimony and political panic. Their outcomes chart the rise and eventual erosion of belief in the Plot. 67 PAGES printed in double columns. A genuine 1776 printing taken from the authoritative Complete Collection of State Trials. Originally compiled to serve both as a legal reference and a vehicle of political discourse the State Trials series shaped contemporary and subsequent understanding of justice authority and dissent. The generously sized sheets on which these trials are printed offer particular pleasure to the eye and hand bearing clear signs of their handmade origin: chain lines and wire impressions from the mould are readily visible some pages display watermarks and the paper varies subtly in thickness all characteristic of 18th century rag paper. The sermons turn chiefly upon Philanthropy and kindred virtues and proceeding more from the heart than the head - per author's preface. Vol I. 300pp Sermons I to XXI Vol II. 312pp Sermons XXII -XLV. VG The work has recently undergone significant restoration by us. It was bought in dis-bound as two vols sewn up as one without the original printers plain boards.There was significant browning and water staining to some signatures. The book was pulled the worst signatures washed and the pages re-sized and the signatures re-sewn on three cords as two vols. The book blocks were then cased in new book boards in full leather as above. The washed signatures are therefor brighter. It woulds perhaps have been desirable to wash all of the signatures but the process is so time consuming it would not have been commercially viable. Rubbing to the binding and rounded corners 3" split to the lower spine. Water stain to the two blank front endpapers; top edge of the title page is torn away where it evidently bore an ownership signature some embrowning and foxing to the text. John Churchman 1705-1775 was a traveling Quaker minister who lived in Nottingham Chester County in eastern Pennsylvania. "An Account of the Gospel Labours." is an autobiographical account of his life and ministry in that area. The importance of the work is less that of a religious tract than of descriptions of American life before the Revolution and with Churchman's interactions with the local Native Americans. A sorceress evoking love. Most likely from Teniers Gallery published in Amsterdam in mid 18th century. From a series of etchings as a part of Theatre of Paintings Theatrum Pictorum published by David Teniers the Younger in the 1660s for his employer at the time Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria. It was a catalog of numerous paintings and painters in the ArchdukeÕs collection. Teniers prepared the engravings of the paintings for the book. See British Museum for more on earlier print c.1660.
