1703139168London: Printed and sold by John Nutt 1703. Planting colonies in the Spanish Americas First edition preceding the second edition of that year with an added postscript. Published in the third year of the War of the Spanish Succession 1701-1714 the anonymous author proposes that in return for the support of Britain and the Netherlands for the claim of the Emperor of Austria to the Spanish crown Spain's territories in America should be ceded to the two mercantile powers. They propose a confederation which will share the treasure from the Spanish mines keeping it out of the hands of a single monarch and in so doing preserve the balance of power in Europe. They moreover support extending the war to the Spanish West-Indies at that stage untouched by the conflict and offer proposals to plant colonies there. They respond to critics who would argue that such attempts at joint control of the American mines and territories would engender war between Britain and the Netherlands as trade brings peace and also reject the arguments that American wealth flowing into the mercantile nations would weaken the nation as was believed to be the case in Spain. The polemic nonetheless offers a stark realpolitik view of world politics and of the war treating as irrelevant the moral questions of stripping the territories of their nominal ally Habsburg Spain rather than the official war aims of taking French territories and stemming the growth of Bourbon power. A scarce treatise with ESTC locating six copies for this issue and a further two copies of the second edition Library Hub and Worldcat adding several more yet still absent from many prominent institutional collections and untraced in auction records. Small quarto 205 x 162 mm. Disbound pamphlet with remnants of original spine the pages numbered in an 18th-century hand 589-654 from its original place in the sammelband vol. With its original separately printed title leaf folded into a wrap-around sleeve. In January 1776 Captain Bromedge wrote to Vice Admiral Schuldham regarding his boarding of the ship Boston Packet and his suspicion that they were carrying stores to the enemy. "I am informed by the crew of the Boston Packet that the Master declared repeatedly on the Passage that could he make Cape Codd he would go in there and land his cargo or could he make Cape Ann he did not fear meeting with some of his Friends to carry him into Beverly or Salem" see Naval Documents of the American Revolution Vol III p. 1005 for the full text of his letter. Regarding this and similar allegations Vice Admiral Graves issued the orders printed here specifically pertaining to the Boston Packet: "You are to seize and detain all Ships and Vessels belonging to the Inhabitants of the four New England Provinces and to send them to Boston." On the verso is printed Rear Admiral Schuldham's confirmation of Graves' order "the probability of these stores being smuggled away to the Enemy.makes me think it highly proper that they should be detained." In effect this is a Letter of Marque issued during the Revolutionary War but pertaining only to a particular class of merchant ships and to two vessels in particular one of which was the Boston Packet. Rare. OCLC shows only the John Carter Brown holding a copy. With manuscript additions dating the document September 1775 and addressing it to Captain Bromadge. 1780ABC_49493Middelburg: P. Gillissen en Zoon 1780. Contemporary decorated wrappers. 8vo. With an engraved title page with 2 oval portraits and a woodcut headpiece. First and only edition of an account of the shipwreck of the Dutch East India Company VOC frigate Woestduin. It gives a detailed account of the events of that day. The ship wrecked near the coast of the island Walcheren now joined to the mainland in the south of the Netherlands on 23 July 1779 on its way back from Batavia Jakarta. Some fishermen among them the brothers Frans and Jacob Naerebout sailed out to rescue crew and passengers. With their fishing boats they managed to save 87 of the 100 passengers on board. The last 16 pages contain a long list of names of subscribers who financed the work.The preliminaries note that the impetus for the publication was a set of four engraved views of the events by Engel Hoogerheide published in 1779. The STCN indicates that some copies of the book include a non-integral frontispiece before the title-page which is not present here. However Landwehr does not mention a frontispiece and none of the digitised copies have one so the frontispiece does not appear to be part of the work. Perhaps the title-page with the engraved double portrait has been mistakenly recorded as two leaves or perhaps some copies have one of the previously published engravings bound in.The wrappers are somewhat frayed with some loss of material on the spine. He decided that the effect was electrical and that its ends was carrying charges of opposite sign much as soft iron is magnetized by a lodestone. This paper is a forerunner of his "Tentamen Theoriae electricitatis et magnetismi" - published 1759 and one of the most original and important books in the history of electricity. It is the first reasoned fruitful exposition of electrical phenomena based on action-at-a-distance."Aepinus’ first reseraches on the thermoelectric properties of this stone Tourmalin which was then of extreme rarity were fundamental. He recognized the electrical nature of the attractive power of a warmed tourmaline and attempted not altogether successfully to reduce its apparent capriciousness to rule. He was particularly struck by the formal similarity between the tourmaline and the magnet in regard to polarity which inspired him to reconsider the possibility then occasionally discussed that electricity and magnetism were basically analogous. First published in French in 1710. It is the only larger philosophical work Leibnitz himself published and it is a work of immense importance to philosophy theology and mathematics. In this work Leibniz represents his excellent calculating machine which has served as the basis for what we now call a computer as he presents the binary arithmetic "Rechnen mit Null und Eins" "calculating with zero and one" in the Beylage p. 926 which forms the basis for the much later developed computer science see PMM 177. This work contains "Anmerkungen" by Richter and "Lebens=Beschreibung" by Fontenelle followed by "Beylage". Large 8vo 29 by 20.5 cm in handsome antique three-quarter red morocco over marbled boards the spine ornately gilt lettered and decorated. 167 leaves printed on one side only. A very pleasing copy internally very fine and fresh the binding with some light expected evidence of age. A VERY BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED WORK. This impressive suite of engravings depict the history of France from the inauguration of Pharamond circa 428 to the year 1314. Condition good minus the calf is rubbed and worn at the corners edges and hinges 1 inch of the backstrip is missing from the top of the spine and the calf is starting to come away for an inch at the bottom edge internally the pages are a little toned and dust darkened there are 2 previous owners' names one on the title page is M. B. D'angreville and is not dated. One on the verso of the title page is either Pelombardy or Delombardy and is dated 1847. Part 3 of the book contains a fold out chart with engravings of the Coats of Arms of the different Bataillons batallions for each district and the names of their Commandant commanding officer and Aide Major assistant major. The chart is a bit rubbed at the folds with 2 small tears without loss the page is a little browned at the edges otherwise clean the fine printing still sharp.
