The Birmingham Riots of 1791 also known as the Priestley Riots were a violent uprising that took place between July 14 and July 17 1791 targeting religious dissenters'most notably the scientist and theologian Joseph Priestley. The riots were fueled by tensions over support for the French Revolution as Priestley and other dissenters were outspoken in their advocacy for political reform.The violence began when a banquet in support of the French Revolution was held at the Royal Hotel in Birmingham sparking outrage among conservative factions. The rioters attacked Dissenting chapels homes and businesses including Priestley's own residence Fairhill which was burned down along with his scientific equipment and papers. Many rioters became intoxicated while looting and some even perished in fires they had started.The London Corresponding Society founded in 1792 was a radical political organization that sought universal suffrage and parliamentary reform. It was closely linked to the ideals of the French National Convention which had abolished the monarchy and established a republic in France. The British government viewed the society as a threat leading to crackdowns on political dissent and the eventual suppression of radical movements. 21 pages of contemporary reports of the Priestley Riot the trials of rioters and aftermath. The engraving depicts the Amphitheatre of Claudius Caesar located in the Campus Martius an important area in ancient Rome used for military training public gatherings and entertainment. The amphitheatre was likely designed for gladiatorial contests public spectacles and possibly naval battles as some Roman amphitheatres were temporarily flooded for staged sea battles. This 1748 engraving presents a detailed depiction of the Israelite encampment based on interpretations by Reyherus and Lamy. It illustrates the standards of the Twelve Tribes showing how the Israelites were arranged during their journey through the wilderness. The tribal banners of the Twelve Tribes of Israel were significant symbols representing each tribe's identity heritage and role within the Israelite community. These banners known as "degel" in Hebrew were used to organize the encampment of the Israelites during their journey through the wilderness as described in the Book of Numbers. The image reflects biblical scholarship and cartographic traditions of the time. Engravings like this were used as visual aids in theological studies helping scholars and readers understand the structure and symbolism of the Israelite encampment. Engravings such as this one contributed to the broader effort of documenting and interpreting biblical events in historical and artistic contexts and was printed in London by T. Osborne A. Miller and J. Osborn.1 folding plate. Close cropped at the left margin and a couple of tears neatly repaired from the rear. The exodus of the Israelites from Egypt represents a pivotal moment in Jewish history as recounted in the Old Testament's book of Exodus. The narrative reveals that the Israelites endured years of enslavement in Egypt until God appointed Moses to guide them out of bondage and return them to the land promised to their forefathers. Following a series of plagues and miraculous events Pharaoh initially consented to their departure but subsequently reneged on his decision and pursued them with his forces. At the Red Sea God miraculously parted the waters enabling the Israelites to cross safely while the Egyptian army was engulfed as the waters returned. This escape signifies the commencement of the Israelites' journey toward the Promised Land and their emancipation from servitude. Size: 20 x 33 cms. Scarce work. A play composed after the novel Things as They Are by William Godwin. A melodrama following the villain is Sir Edward Mortimer a head-keeper of the New Forest who has been acquitted on a charge of murder some years previously. As well as Wilford the hero who discovers Mortimer's secret from documents in an old iron chest. Written by George Colman known as "the Younger" an English dramatist and miscellaneous writer who was the son of George Colman the Elder. Bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally worn with rubbing and light loss to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd mark to the boards. Both boards detached but present with loss to the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot or handling mark. Age toning to the first and last few pages with discolouration to pages 106 and 107. Good Only Cadell and Davies hardcover

178894952December 8 1788. 1788. Very good. - Over 45 words penned on 9-1/4 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide creamy white watermarked paper. Apparently only one page of a longer letter likely missing an attached leaf from what is claimed by the endorsement on the verso to be a letter of recommendation. Only the closing lines and sentiments are present. "Lady Clifden presents her best compliments to you and adds her wishes to mine to see you once more in good health & spirits in this old Castle." Signed "Clifden". "Brig. Gen. Clarke" is penned in darker ink in a contemporary hand next to the Viscount's signature. A few letters are smudged including the first letter in Viscount Clifden's signature. The letter is folded for mailing with ink annotations centered on the verso indicating that the letter was penned by Lord Clifden on December 8 1788 and received nearly a year later on September 1st 1789. The letter is additionally identified as "Recommending Mr. ". There are remnants of gray paper adhering to one edge of the verso indicating that the letter was once mounted. Very good. <p>The Irish peer & politician James Agar 1st Viscount Clifden 1734-1789 was a Member of Parliament for Gowran. He together with William Ponsonby 1st Baron Ponsonby held the post of joint Postmaster General of Ireland from 1784 to 1789. December 8, 1788. unknown
