The "Blues" served in the French Revolutionary Wars the Peninsular War and the Battle of Waterloo. Bound in contemporary 3/4 calf over marbled paper covered boards nicely rebacked with original spine laid down black morocco spine label gilt compartments fully gilt decorated some wear to corners. A contemporary owner's name dated 1846 on the front free endpaper. The Rev. Hunt a radical reformer seeking temperance at all levels wrote three books in 1845 all published by Griffith & Simon and all espousing total abstinence. "The writer of these volumes endeavors to persuade all men every where to embrace the doctrine of total abstinence and certes if he succeeds there will be no drunkards. He has done much to rescue the slaves of strong drink . and has earned the title of 'The Drunkard's Friend.' His D.F. is worth more than a D.D. So long as the advocates of total abstinence contend for the principle on the grounds of expediency we believe the argument to be sound and scriptural . On the other hand to argue that the use of wine is in itself sinful is to assume a position which cannot be successfully maintained: 'For the Kingdom of God consisteth not in meat and drink'. from a review in The Protestant Quarterly vol. Issued shortly after the close of the Civil War when travel by civilians in formerly Confederate territory was still closely monitored by Union troops. This pass allows Schuyler "to pass from these Head-Quarters to Petersburgh with such articles as are necessary for this party to take and return" the pass expiring on May 15. Signed in type "By command of Brig. General M. R. Patrick" as the Provost Marshall General and countersigned in ink by Captain C. E. Scoville. An early American printing of a great many through the remainder of the 19th century based on the London edition of 1853. An extensive treatment of basic mechanical drawing is followed by directions for the more refined skills of shading perspective etc. The plates detail all manner of geometric mechanical and architectural renderings to assist the draughtsman in his work. Labels various Indian tribes and topography. The map notes the Bad Axe River the site for the Bad Axe Massacre or the Battle of Bad Axe fought in 1832 just a year prior to the publishing of this map. Map is in good condition with minor foxing and edge wear over the bottom margin. Nice to see in an uncolored edition. Image measures 11.5 x 14.5".<br/><br/> This detailed plan of Warsaw provides insight into the city's history. The map itself depicts the city around 1831 rendering in exacting detail the shapes of buildings and curves of streets that make up its structure. Within this rendering a dashed line highlighted in yellow points out the boundary of the city in 1762. This inclusion reveals the extent of growth which the city had undergone in the intervening years now extending to the new outer fortifications highlighted in red. The little-developed Praga district is visible across the river with a note that the district had burned in 1794 and 1831. Along the bottom of the map are elevations of 13 of the city's prominent landmarks. The map is in excellent condition with generous margins. Crisp and clear impression with very minor chips not affecting the image. 1831008897Thibodeauxville 1831. Unbound. Good. This two-page folded letter measures 16" x 9.75" unfolded. The cover has no postmark nor rate mark so it is likely it was carried outside of official post office channels. The letter's paper is supple but it has developed splits along several folds so quite fragile. <br /><br />In this letter the Thibodeauxville Justice of the Peace seeks information about two men James Stewart and Joseph R. King he has arrested for horse theft and the probable murder of a watchmaker: <p style="margin-left:3%; margin-right:3%;">"There was a complaint . . . there were two men James Stewart and Joseph R King . . .of Suspicious Character that there were strong circumstances . . . they were guilty of Murder or horse stealing and probably both. . . . They started from Iberville with an old Dutchman a clock or watch repairer. . . . About two miles below Plaquemine the horse threw the Old man . . . and they took his horse . . . and Saddlebags and threw the old mans tools into the Mississippi. . . . The horse was found . . . and King and Stewart were arrested and are now in jail. I shall feel under obligations to any man that will give me information of the Old man whether he is dead or living or any other information that will serve to an expose the crimes which Stewart and King may have committed." <p>I could find no record that King and Stewart were ever brought to trial. Also neither name appears on the historical list of Louisiana executions. This does not mean that the pair were not convicted of murder. In the 1830s <br /><br />Louisiana was one of three states Alabama and Tennessee being the other two that changed their laws to give juries the complete discretion to sentence convicted murderers to punishments short of death. Some see Banner <i>The Death Penalty: an American History</i> have suggested that this was so that juries which at the time were composed only of white men could take race into account when they handed down sentences. Perhaps . . . but only two men were executed in Louisiana in 1831 one white and one black. <br /><br /> books

In fact she was one Edgar Allan Poe's favorite authors and he was known to had referred to her current book as the best novel written by an American female novelist.
