Complete series of 50 colour cigarette cards. Each is captioned, numbered, and with extended explanatory text on verso. Placed in pockets in 5 clear plastic sheets. In mint condition. ~ First edition of this lovely series. While books with the cards glued onto them beyond recovery are rather common, complete series of unused cards which are preserved entirely in the original state, so much so in such fine condition, are rather scarce. Beautifully illustrated cards, published by W. D. & H. O. Wills, branch of the Imperial Tobacco Company of Great Britain and Ireland. With instruction of how to choose, prepare and equip a Refuge Room; how to control, cool-down and extinct an incendiary bomb; fire fighting; large chapter on chemical gas warfare which includes the various shelters, respirators and their handling, protective gear, training, etc.; air defence, including fighter planes, balloon barrage, anti-aircraft searchlight and sound locator units, guns, etc.

Bound in the original publisher's richly decorated stiff wrappers, volume I has some marks inside cover and a stripe of paper, same colour as page itself, which covers inscription on title-page. Each page within decorated border. Set in Gothic type. Original decorated yellow card wrappers, both panels printed in gilt and blue, spine gilt. In fine condition. Excellent copy, very well-preserved. ~ First edition. A most charming collection. [ADDED:] This particular copy comes from the bequest of renowned uniform historian and researcher Dr. Pieter Roelse and includes, loosely inserted, a large number of newspaper and magazine photographs related to the book's subject. The clippings are often additionally captioned in neat hand, and source and date are often given. Some period material is included. The clippings often correspond directly to illustrations in the book and enhance image and word, providing extra, useful reference. It should be noted that this material, the result of a lifelong research, study, and collection is provided herewith strictly as-is, subject to what is physically present in the book.
