187596430Lock and Whitfield circa 1875. 1875. Very good. - A richly hued 4-1/2 inch high oval woodburytype portrait of Leon Gambetta mounted onto 11-1/4 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide stiff cream stock. A light gray printed decorative frame highlights the image. The subject's name is printed in the same light gray centered within the lower half of the sheet. "Lock and Whitfield" and "Woodbury Process" are printed at left and right along the lower edge. There is a light vertical crease in the mat and a tiny stain to it's right edge. Very good. <p>The French statesman Leon Gambetta 1838-1882 was admitted to the bar in 1859 and the Conference Mole in 1861. In 1868 Gambetta was selected to defend the journalist Delescluze who was being prosecuted for promoting the erection of a monument to Baudin who'd been killed resisting the 1851 coup d'etat. Gambetta used the occasion to both attack the coup d'etat and the government. He was elected to the assembly by both a district in Paris and one in Marseille. Initially opposing the war with Prussia he gradually came to accept the patriotic line and called for strong measures following the disaster at Sedan. It was he who proclaimed the deposition of the emperor at the corps legislatif and the establishment of a republic at the Hotel de Ville. As one of the first members of the new Government of National defense he became Minister of the Interior. When the delegation to organize resistance in the provinces failed Gambetta set off in the "Armand-Barbes" a coal gas-filled balloon to take control as minister of the interior and of war in Tours. With his assistant secretary of war and the young officer of engineers Freycinet Gambetta organized an army which might have successfully relieved Paris if Metz had not fallen. He later faded from politics after his republican party was defeated by the conservatives and monarchists.<p>Both a printing process and the print which it produces Woodburytype was invented and patented by Walter B. Woodbury in 1864. A photomechanical process Woodbury type prints are made from exposing a dichromate-sensitized sheet of gelatin to UV light shining through a photographic negative. Each area of the gelatin hardens to a depth in proportion to the amount of exposure to the light before it is then soaked in warm water. The relief image is then pressed onto a sheet of lead to create an intaglio metal printing plate. Lock and Whitfield, circa [1875]. unknown
189698132New York: E.C. Meinecke & Co. February 22nd 1896. 1896. Good. - An original 11 inch high by 7-1/2 inch wide gravure by E.C. Meinecke & Co. of New York on 15 inch high by 12 inch wide buff stock. The sienna toned image is a caricature of Chauncey Depew seated on a dock at Peekskill Landing fishing pole in hand and a string of fish at his side. Shaded by a Chinese straw hat with his feet dangling from the dock Depew is attired in a white button down shirt and capri-like pants. The menu's title "Lotos Club To Our Chauncey." is illustrated with the image of Depew's mansion and a banner of a winged locomotive pulling a train above. Depew's fishing pole with its line dipping into the lily pad pond at bottom left diagonally crosses the menu's selection while a train exiting a tunnel is depicted at bottom right. The menu engraved along the bottom left quarter of the image includes such offerings as Blue Points Chicken consomme a la Royal Timbales a la Depew Kennebec Salmon Asparagus a la Peekskill etc. The artist's name is engraved at the bottom right of the image. We can only make out the artist's initials "G.S." due to damage to a portion of the name. The gravure is boldly signed "Chauncey M. Depew" in pencil across the top. Mounted with glue from the verso onto a slightly larger cardboard mat there is a tear along the right edge of the print's border with some minor chipping and three holes along the left edge. There is minor foxing with a small spot of dampstaining to the top of the right border. The top edge of the heavier mat on which the print is mounted is chipped. Good. <p>RARE. Provenance: From the estate of American impresario and Medal of Honor recipient Major James B. Pond.<p>The Lotos Club with its literary and artistic bent hosted frequent "State Dinners" for which it produced elaborate souvenir menus.<p>At this dinner held in New York on February 22 1896 Chauncey Depew delivered a speech on the occasion of Washington's and Lincoln's Birthdays: ". Lincoln attained from the log cabin of the poor white in the wilderness the same position which George Washington reached from his grand old mansion and palatial surroundings on the Potomac. Widely as they are separated these two heroes of the two great crises of our national life stand together in representing the solvent powers of the inspiring processes and the hopeful opportunities of American liberty. The one coming from the top to the Presidency and the other from the bottom to the Presidency of the United States the leadership of the people the building up of government and the reconstruction of states they grandly illustrate the fact that under our institutions there is neither place nor time for the socialists or the anarchist but there is a place and always a time notwithstanding the discouragements of origin or of youth for grit pluck ambition honesty and brains".<p>The attorney for Cornelius Vanderbilt's railroad interests and president of the New York Central Railroad System Chauncey Depew 1834-1928 served as U.S. Senator from New York from 1899 to 1911. 1839055027Kostantiniyye Constantinople - Istanbul: Takvîm-i Vekâyi. AH 1255 1839. Soft cover. Very Good. Original newspaper taken from a volume. Folio. 425 x 28 cm. In Ottoman script Old Turkish with Arabic letters. 5 p. Extremely rare early issue of this first official newspaper of the Ottoman Empire after the proclamation of Reform Tanzîmât in 1839 informed Daguerre's new and weird invention "photography" as it would be called in the 1850s to the Ottoman peoples and readers. The article reads: "It is the talk of the town steam engines have been able to run on rails in factories in recent years. Meanwhile a man carefully focused on his thoughts so much and the craft turned into a strange art and finally a coquettish mirror surface appeared. This skillful Frenchman named Daguerre drew the lines of objects by reflecting the sunlight with the methods of the different science of art he learned drew the contours of the objects and gave 20 years secretly and openly to the formation of this strange art. Finally he reached the goal and this event won the appreciation and admiration of everyone. This is to say the image of the object in the form of a large or small box free from light is pictured inside by passing through the glass in front of it. In order for the reflected picture to be captured on a surface some chemicals must be prepared. Daguerre has achieved this mix based on his experience. This substance applied on the plate is called iodine. After the plate is kept in the vapor of the iodine for a few minutes it is immediately placed in the dark box and the image passing through the window of the box is pictured for five minutes. Considering that some of the things that should be hidden are captured like this it will be understood what a valuable invention this is.". In the continuation of the article it is written that an Englishman named Talbot Henry Fox Talbot found the same thing with almost the same processes ! but Daguerre had taken pictures before. Takvim-i Vekâyi was the first fully Turkish-language newspaper. It was launched in 1831 by Sultan Mahmud II taking over from the Moniteur ottoman as the Official Gazette of the Ottoman Empire. With the beginning of the Tanzimat reform period Takvim-i Vekayi produced versions in multiple language editions. It ceased publication in 1878 resuming in 1891-2 before being closed again. It resumed in 1908 until around 1922. In the 1831-1878 period it published a total of 2119 issues - an average of slightly less than one a week. <br/> <br/> Takvîm-i Vekâyi., [AH 1255] paperback

1890109514Adelaide: Printed for the Proprietor and Publisher A. Timmann at the 'Pioneer' Office 1890. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide Printed for the Proprietor and Publisher A. Timmann at the 'Pioneer' Office 1890 and 1891. Octavo 13 issues bound in one volume 148 pages continuous pagination plus the large folding supplement to Number 10 March 7 1891 a broadside 455 × 335 mm with illustrations. Contemporary flush-cut quarter leather and stippled cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; neat repairs to the leather at the head and foot of the spine; acidic newsprint used for the last two numbers uniformly tanned; overall in excellent condition. The recto of the large folding supplement to Number 10 contains the text with three line illustrations of an article that 'appeared originally in the "SA Register" in six short letters': 'Protection or Freedom Our Manufactories Our People and Our Land Values'. 'The publication of "The Pioneer" is undertaken solely with a view to stimulate thought and promote discussion and if approved of it is hoped will find the ready support of all Friends of Reform. The labor involved is given voluntarily and gratuitously; any profits made will go entirely towards extending its range of operations.' Piper 1865-1936 a South Australian Supreme Court judge with his small name-stamp and personal library number 677 on the front pastedown. Printed for the Proprietor and Publisher, A. 1843000902London: Thomas Rodd 1843. 16pp disbound from a volume at some point t.e.g. Slightly browned one or two spots of foxing but generally clean. Wise notes that "In 1843 when advertising the present pamphlet for sale Rodd asserted that it was a facsimile reprint of an alleged original edition of which the author was said to have printed twenty copies in 1816. No example of this mysterious original has ever been unearthed . My own opinion is that no original ever existed . The motto 'We pity the plumage but forget the dying bird' was taken by Shelley from Paine's 'Rights of Man' 1817 Pt.I p. 24 'He Burke pities the plumage but forgets the dying bird'. This clearly denies any impression of the address dated 1816". The pamphlet decries the difference between the public concern for the death of the Princess and their indifference to the plight of the poorest in society plus ca change and also examines the execution of the leaders of the Pentrich Rising. 18010010067France. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1801. Ephemera. On offer is an excellent edition of the French Republic Legal Bulletin from the early days of the Republic. The manuscript is entitled BULLETIN DES LOIS DE LA REPUBLIC Legal Bulletin of the Republic and was published according to the new revolutionary calendar on 22 Frimaire of Year 10 November 22 1801. This manuscript details 19 separate laws that were passed by the government of France a 5 member committee known as the Directory in the bloody days following the French Revolution. They deal with matters such as the following: No 1087 Loi qui autorize un echange de batimens nationaux et communaux dans la ville de Blois Law which authorizes an exchange of national and communal buildings in the city of BloisNo 1094 Arret portant qu'il se tiendra dans la commune de Curel department de la Haute Marne trois foires . Decree stating that there will be three fairs in the town of Curel department of Haute Marne. No 1101 Arret qui nomme le Jean-Bon Saint-Andre prefet du department du Mont Tonnerre Decree which appoints the Jean-Bon Saint-Andre prefect of the department of Mont TonnerreNo 1102 Arret qui retablit le bureau de guarantie de Terascon Decree that re-establishes the guaranty office of TerasconNo 1100 Arret qui ordonne le paiment de pensiones et secours accordes a des veuves d'invalides Decree that orders the payment of pensions and relief granted to widows of invalidsEach Decree begins with a reference to is source of authority in some cases Les Consuls de la Republique in others Au Nom du Peuple Francais Bonaparte premier Consul .The manuscript concludes with this assertion: Le premier Consul signe Bonaparte Par le premier Consul: le secretaire d'etat signe Hugues B. Maret. Le ministre de la gurerre signe Alex Berthier. Certifie conforme: Le Ministre de la Justice AbrialTranslation: The First Consul signed Bonaparte By the First Consul: the Secretary of State signed Hugues B. Maret. The minister of war signed Alex Berthier. Certified true: The Minister of Justice AbrialThis manuscript is interesting as the 4 years of rule by the Directory were years of turmoil chaos and continual warfare with other countries. In late 1795 there was a Royalist uprising that threatened to overturn the Directory. To save itself it called upon Napoleon Bonaparte to provide a defence of the National Constitution. Bonaparte used canons to disperse the mobs killing an estimated 1400 people in the streets. He was promoted to General commanding the French armies. Four years later he returned to overthrow the Directory and have himself installed as First Consul The Revolution was over. Napoleon had a profound impact on the development of the modern world. No place is this more evident than his detailed and extensive legal code known in France as the Code civil des Français and more commonly simply as the Napoleonic Code. Across Europe and in North America Province of Quebec Canada the Code is foundation of the legal systems in place. And its influence spread throughout Central and South America via Spanish and Portuguese colonies and to other parts of the world where it heavily influenced the laws of many of the countries. For a historian this is a superb look into the details that had to be mastered in building a new Republic even in the midst of a prolonged and immense war between the France and a coalition of all of its principal enemies. For a legal scholar or historian this is a wonderful piece of legal history part of the most far-reaching and important legal revisions in modern history. This manuscript is a single sheet measuring approximately 22 inches by 17 inches. Printed doublesided it is folded to create an octavo containing 16 pages. The folds have not been cut to separate out the pages. There is some slight staining and feathering along the outer edges. ; 22"x17"; 16 pages .

1809000867cSCOTLAND IRELAND ENGLAND DUBLIN EDINBURGH UK. Good. 1809. On offer is a remarkable original 1809 - 1833 handwritten manuscript book once used by the British Army's 94th Regiment of Foot. This book contains all manner of writings relevant to the running and goings-on of the Regiment by the Officers. The book is rather eclectic containing standing orders regimental orders different charts and forms for payroll and other reportage for example on the conditions of the Dublin Garrison orders of the day direct communications between officers public requests for leave advancement of funds settling of accounts etc. public apologies for poor behavior copies of letters sent to superiors up to and including the Duke of York Commander of all His Majesty's Forces and many other of Britain's peerage and there are even personal reminiscences notes of reference for departing soldiers plus much much more. Most of the entries of personal notes and those for Day Book purposes are signed by all manner of officers and peerage; Colonels Captains Lords and many reference specific orders by the Supreme Commander of the Army or even the King. Most fascinating are the 'Memorialist' messages of certain officers writing in the 3rd person touting themselves while seeking favor. 164 pp of history and methodology of this noted British Army regiment contained in this entirely handwritten book. Most of the entries are circa 1809 - 1827 but the oldest entry in the book is dated Edinburgh Castle 1833 and is addressed to what appears to be 'My Dear Beaver' while the correspondent signs in initials F.M. late of St. Lucia. He makes reference to Mr. Beaver as the clergyman that baptized his 3 children. Also of note: on the very last page written upside down are a quote a note and an invitation dated Fort Charlotte 1825 to His Excellency Major General Blackwell by Mr. and Mrs. Murray. Many clues for the astute researcher will assuredly unveil many of the writers in this fascinating piece of British militaria.
