Hardcover. nice solid copy light soiling to bottom edge internally clean; jacket is edgeworn small piece missing at bottom right-hand corner of front panel faint dampstain near top of front panel nearly split along rear foldover still quite attractive. Futurist fantasy in which a young Greek war refugee introduced to the wonders of modern machinery works his way up from garage mechanic to member of an airline crew. This gets him mixed up with a mysterious American arms merchant and he eventually finds himself a stowaway on a gigantic Russian airship the "Zodiak" operated by the Militant Anti-God League which of course! takes its marching er flying orders straight from Moscow and whose mission he discovers is to blanket the world with Communist propaganda leaflets and thereby lay the groundwork for a World Revolution. The book appears to be chock-full of mystical symbolism and stuff check the signs of the Zodiac on the jacket spine and in its closing pages the author quotes that well-known mystic Henry Ford: "Shall we not some day reach a point where the machine is becomes all powerful and the man of no consequence" Shall we not indeed . Having struggled to find work in New York City 25-year-old Gloria Steinem moved to Cambridge in 1959 to assume the position of co-director of the anti-Communist program the Independent Service for Information on the Vienna Youth Festival. The Service masquerading as a private enterprise whose aim was to send democracy- and capitalism-loving American youth to the communist-run Festival was funded by an anonymous donor later revealed to be the CIA though Steinem would have been aware of this from the start. The present pamphlet was issued a month before the Festival began and provides a detailed critique of the quality of Soviet literature: "The trouble with Soviet literature as Ilya Ehrenburg sees it is that Soviet writers say things they do not believe" p. 5. Rare and desirable signed by Dylan. Bob Dylan often performed and sometimes toured with Joan Baez starting when she was a singer of mostly traditional songs. As Baez adopted some of Dylan's songs into her repertoire and even introduced Dylan to her avid audiences a large following on the folk circuit it helped the young songwriter to gain initial recognition. By the time Dylan recorded his first LP 1962 he had developed a style reminiscent of Woody Guthrie. First Edition First Printing. <br /><br />Oblong 16mo 6 1/2 x 5 1/8 inches; 165 x 130 mm 4 pages in stapled red white and blue wrappers. <p>Invitation for a Champagne party and auction at the studio of artist Larry Rivers on May 2 1961 to raise money for the Living Theatre and its forthcoming European tour. The auction included art works and manuscripts most notably the entire manuscript of Allen Ginsberg's "Kaddish" as well as works by John Cage Louise Nevelson Robert Rauschenberg Grace Hartigan Jasper Johns Willem De Kooning Helen Frankenthaler Franz Kline and others.<br /></p><p>Rivers's studio was at 102 West Third Street in the West Village. The invitation requested a contribution of $25 per couple and assured attendees that the evening was "informal." The guests of honor were Eva Gabor Denise Darcel Arlene Francis Shelley Winters and Kim Stanley.<br /></p><p>The evening was a huge success according to The New York Times raising about $20500 equal to around $180000 in 2021. Foundations had promised an additional $5000 while $18000 had already been raised in previous months thus assuring that the Living Theatre's European trip would go ahead.<br /></p><p>The Living Theatre planned to perform in Paris Rome London Turin Milan Amsterdam Glasgow and Florence with plays by Bertolt Brecht In the Jungle of Cities William Carlos Williams Many Loves Jack Gelber The Connection and Luigi Pirandello Tonight We Improvise.<br /></p><p>An interesting snapshot of the New York art literary and entertainment worlds of 1961.
