Campbell "Bede St Bede Bæda known as the Venerable Bede 673/4–735". This edition was first published in Cologne in 1612 these volumes are the second edition printed there. Saint Bede is remembered for his contributions to ecclesiastical and British historical writings. Bede wrote analytically and was fascinated by time and the creation of life as they were written about in early Christian sources. The sources available to him included Eusebius of Caesarea Orosius Eutropius and the earlier British historian Gildas. Historians label his Historia Ecclesiastica Anglis Gentorum as the greatest culmination of his writings and some point out that it helped to create the sense of a national English identity at a time when the Angles and the Saxons were still forging intertribal unity. His history of Christianity in Britain largely focuses on the years 597-731 after a brief explanation of Christianity in Roman-controlled Britain. Bede wrote in his own autobiography that his life was devoted to "learning and letters" and he was well-beloved in his own time and long after including by Britain's first king Alfred which is largely why most of his work survives today. His translations of various religious histories and lives of the Saints into Latin made these works accessible to his fellow monks and Bede even did an Old English translation of St. John's Gospel which had it survived would be the earliest lengthy work of prose in English. Bede was an author who was influenced greatly by the writers of Late Antiquity and his career is one of the most significant among those who wrote during the early Middle Ages. With a small later bookplate and an 18th century ownership mark Signet Library on each front pastedown. No other institutional markings. Bede’s most famous work his "An Ecclesiastical History of the English People" Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum begins with the invasion of the British Isles by Roman forces and is considered one of the most important historical records documenting Roman rule Anglo-Saxon settlement and the evolution of the Church on the island. With its focus on Anglo-Saxon history the work is considered a key foundational text in the forming of a national English identity. The "Ecclesiastical History" contains stories that serve as the only source documenting the conversion to Christianity of the Anglo-Saxon tribes. It tells the story of Britons from Julius Caesar’s invasion to the time of Bede himself . He tells the story of battles conversions and miracles performed by monks and bishops and details Britain’s early history from the Roman invasion. He furthermore describes the organization and establishment of Christianity in the English church and covers the personal history of Holy Ethelwald and miracles of growth within the English church such as the development of the bishopric. "Bede’s works fall into three groups: grammatical and “scientific†scriptural commentary and historical and biographical. His earliest works included treatises on spelling hymns figures of speech verse and epigrams. His first treatise on chronology De temporibus “On Times†with a brief chronicle attached was written in 703. In 725 he completed a greatly amplified version De temporum ratione “On the Reckoning of Time†with a much longer chronicle. Both these books were mainly concerned with the reckoning of Easter. His earliest biblical commentary was probably that on the Revelation to John 703–709; in this and many similar works his aim was to transmit and explain relevant passages from the Fathers of the Church. Although his interpretations were mainly allegorical treating much of the biblical text as symbolic of deeper meanings he used some critical judgment and attempted to rationalize discrepancies. Among his most notable are his verse 705–716 and prose before 721 lives of St. Cuthbert bishop of Lindisfarne. These works are uncritical and abound with accounts of miracles; a more exclusively historical work is Historia abbatum c. 725; “Lives of the Abbotsâ€. In 731/732 Bede completed his Historia ecclesiastica. Divided into five books it recorded events in Britain from the raids by Julius Caesar 55–54 BCE to the arrival in Kent 597 CE of St. Augustine of Canterbury. For his sources he claimed the authority of ancient letters the “traditions of our forefathers†and his own knowledge of contemporary events. Bede’s Historia ecclesiastica leaves gaps tantalizing to secular historians. Although overloaded with the miraculous it is the work of a scholar anxious to assess the accuracy of his sources and to record only what he regarded as trustworthy evidence. The 1688-edition constitutes the second edition of the present 1612-edition which is "According to Dr. Henry the only complete edition" Lowndes I:143. These three editions are also the only ones known to have been printed in folio though Lowndes mentions the 1688-edition as 4to. The 1612-edition is the rarest. Some of the works contained in this edition are said not to be Bede's own as some of the many scientific richly illustrated works on geography the heavens the universe music etc. bear small resemblance to his other works. Size: 86 x 110 cm. / 33.9 x 433 inch. Large very rare hand coloured copy of Willem Blaeu's famous wall map of the Americas which is considered ""one of the most influential maps of America ever made"" Burden. The map is based on the latest explorations and shows everything known at the time about the American continent as well as the north and south poles which are included on two inset maps. As the wall map was in great demand but expensive and difficult to transport it was also printed by various French and Italian publishers for the local market. Like Blaeu's edition the French and Italian editions are very scarce as it is highly unusual for wall maps from this period to survive. We have only been able to trace 4 other copies of the present edition in sales records of the past hundred years of which only 1 is also hand coloured. Willem Janszoon Blaeu 1571-1638 first published the wall map in 1608 together with similar maps of Asia Africa and Europe. He spared no expenses for this project and hired Hessel Gerritsz 1580-1632 a great cartographer in his own right to both design the maps and research the latest sources exhaustively to create the most accurate depiction of the continents possible. Although the Americas were drawn too wide due to the inadequate methods of determining longitude at the time the shapes and most of the coastline are already very well defined. Central and South America were drawn according to Portuguese and Spanish sources and ""Nova Scotia"" on the Atlantic coast was based on the voyages of Samuel de Champlain and Pierre Gua de Monts from 1604. After the first edition in 1608 the four continents were subsequently published in 1612 and in 1624 they were reissued by Hendrik Hondius and in 1655 by Nicholas Visscher. The third state included changes to the Strait of Magellan based on Le Maire's findings from his expedition in 1615-1617. The map has been beautifully decorated with cartouches and small engravings. The cartouche in the lower right tells how the New World was discovered and is flanked by the figures of Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. Below are four roundels containing the portraits of the four circumnavigators: Ferdinand Magellan Sir Francis Drake Sir Thomas Cavendish and Olivier Van Noort. The Atlantic features a beautiful depiction of King Philip III of Spain riding a sea chariot supposedly on a figurative visit to his New World possessions and in the Pacific Poseidon with his wife Amphitrite and son Triton can be found amidst battle ships and sea monsters. Elephants rhinoceroses camels and ostriches roam the continent. Some copies of the present map include a decorative border with illustrations of native people and sometimes also a textual border with descriptions which are not present here. It appears that these borders were engraved on separate copper plates and were not always included. Blaeu's wall maps were first printed in Italy in 1646 probably by Stefano Mozzi Scolari 1598-1650 in Venice which were based on the third state from 1624. The present copy was engraved by Pietro Todeschi dates unknown around 1670 and published in Bologna in 1673 probably by Giuseppe Longhi who had worked on similar projects with Todeschi before. It closely resembles the Venetian edition which was most likely used as the model. Todeschi's edition is however clearly recognizable because of the misspelling of Mar del Norte as Mar del Noi and the fact that California has been drawn as an island. It is the only edition known to do so. The map has been reinforced on the back and is somewhat browned and stained; the surface has faded the work has been professionally restored: the colouring has been retouched some of the losses have been filled in. He actively advanced both the theoretical and applied scientific practices of his era. He served as the official Royal Cosmographer to King Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu. : He worked as a professor of mathematics in Paris teaching both pure theory and applied branches like cartography. Duret acted as a vital publisher and promoter for the famous mathematician François Viète. He helped popularize Viète's revolutionary system of symbolic algebra across France. : In 1635 he published <em>Nouvelle Théorie des Planètes</em>. He followed this up in 1641 by publishing detailed astronomical ephemerides and tables. These tools provided essential calculation methods for determining celestial positioning at sea and on land.</p><p>Owen Jay Gingerich 1930-2023 was an American astronomer who had been professor emeritus of astronomy and of the history of science at Harvard University and a senior astronomer emeritus at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Dawsons Bookshop label also affixed on rear pastedown. <br/><br/>First edition and scarce variant copy of this classic Dutch poetry and emblem work by Zierikzee native Adriaan Hoffer which Benesch described as .adorned with etchings which in themselves are perfect little works of art although only slightly connected with the text Benesch Rubens to Daumier p. 39. Hoffers work contains poems comprising the authors self-commentary Biblical quotes and notably mentioned the victory of the Spanish silverfleet by Pieter Heyn in 1628 all in verse. Largely written in the vernacular Hoffer supplemented Latin notes to his poetry through ample marginal references. Hoffer was a wealthy man and book collector with many connections in the Zierikzee community. The Nederduytsche Poëmata was his most important work which sought to restrict the interest of natural inquiry to its edifying potential. This edition is notable for its engravings by Crispijn van de Passe the Younger a talented engraver who inherited his fathers style and repertoire and who remains inextricably linked to seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. Not much else is known about the influence of Hoffers Nederduytsche Poëmata or Dutch Poems but an earlier work of the same title was written by Daniel Heinsius 1580-1655 and published in Amsterdam by Willem Jansson in 1618. Mildly brownspotted. <br/><br/><em>The "Small miseries of the War" was unfinished - there was only published 7 etchings the 4 first offered here.Callot was one of the first great artists to practise the graphic art exclusively. His innovative series of prints documenting the horrors of War of which his series "Les Miseres et les Mal-Heurs De la Guerre" Great Miseries of War is the most famous greatly influenced the socially conscious artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. For instance its themes and imagery were used as a source by Goya and he is acknowledged as equal to the three great: Dürer Rembrandt Goya. It is said that no one ever to such an extent possessed the talent of grouping a large number of figures in a small space and of representing with two or three bold strokes the expression action and peculiar features of each individual. This recension of the elder's works was prepared by Andre Schott 1552-1629 a Renaissance Jesuit priest and scholar of the Duchy of Brabant and first appeared in 1607. This is the second Elzevier edition of this recension reprinted nearly line for line from the earlier Elzevier of 1640; although less sought than the 1940 edition Willems no. 672 calls this edition very beautiful 'fort belle.' Leather binding with four raised bands and a leather title plate on the spine gilt titling and decoration. Leather scuffed with moderate rubbing to edges and points of fraying at fore-edge corners; leather dry and cracked over the spine with minor chipping to spine head and some loss of the title plate. Front outer hinge beginning to split but binding else intact and sound. Pages age-toned and lightly foxed.
