1679D11030Lyon: Chez Pierre Guillimin 1679. Hardcover. Very Good. Lyon: Chez Pierre Guillimin M.DC.LXXIX 1679. 8vo 150 x 80mm. 428pp. 43. Full page engraved frontispiece depicting a worshipper at the foot of the cross laden with Passion instruments crown of thorns sponge on reed withes ladder spear pillar with caption Les souffrances & la mort Dun DIEV pour nous Nôtre Continuelle. Meditation. The suffering and death of God for us is our continual meditation. Woodcut device of heraldic shield and cardinals hat with tassels on title. Woodcut chapter head vignettes and tailpieces one repeating of Evangelist John on isle of Patmos and another of Veronicas veil and woodcut historiated initials mostly birds throughout. Dedicated to LÂme Chrétienne. The Christian Soul. Italic and Roman type. Contemporary speckled calf spine gilt in compartments; joints splitting light edgewear; margins trimmed close affecting few engravings. Front pastedown with book label of Justin Godart 1871-1956 a French politician and bibliophile of Lyon. Godarts personal library stamp is also on title with the Lyonnais lion. Internet records show that the library of Justin Godart was sold at auction in Paris by Hôtel Drouot in 1957. Importantly this book remained part of the local fabric of the French city from its publication to over 275 years. Stated seventh edition of this devotional text on the Passion of Christ printed by a public brotherhood of Catholics although no other editions located. It is a highly uncommon pocket prayer book with little traceable history save the fact that this same 1679 edition appeared in an auction by Techener in 1861. Another Meditations publication by the same society appears 39 years later as the Nouvelle édition Chez Barthelemy Martin 1718 now held in the Public Library of Lyon. This elusive and largely anonymous French Catholic confraternity probably a local chapter of Lyon likely had various periods of flourishing and disbands or did not make large print-runs of their books possibly explaining the scarcity.

The aim of this brotherhoods untitled publication was to disseminate widely the prayers and reflections to be offered daily first day of the month second day etc. for the suffering of Christ. By publishing a text like this the brothers would in effect be gathering lower orders to participate in penitential exercises which is in itself an act of devotion and which would win them indulgences. In total there are 41 copperplate engravings attributed to François Houat who came from a family of printers and engravers in Northern France. These engravings are exceptional for their dramatic shadows and perspectives. As well the Guillimin publishers were known for their Catholic devotional imprints. For 31 days a full-page copperplate engraved scene of Christs Passion with captions precedes each daily reflection. The daily meditations build up chronologically ending with Christs death on the cross. Full-page engravings are also for Litany of the Passion Litany to the Infant Christ Nativity Lent repeating frontispiece Resurrection Ascension Pentecost the Blessed Sacrament and the emblemata of the brotherhood skull instruments of Passion candle and hourglass. French penitent confraternities survived during the early modern centuries as they underwent several transformations which made them more reflective of French as opposed to Italian devotional sensibilities. They enjoyed prestige and spiritual currency in Catholic society right up the Revolution. Chez Pierre Guillimin hardcover

In his view"heresy making" was usually the defensive reaction of those in authority rather than a true indictment of unconventional thinkers. He thought that the worst calamity in Church history was its establishment as the accepted and orthodox faith by the Roman Emperor Constantine in the fourth century. 168722346Bordeaux: Pierre Abegou 1687. Marbled wrappers. 4to. With an inserted latter engraved frontispiece portrait of the Polish King Jan III Sobieski engraved by F. Jollain. Very rare pamphlet published during the European wars against Turkey with a frontispiece portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Léopold I 1640-1705 Archduke of Austria and King of Bohemia and Hungary. He succeeded his father Ferdinand III in 1657 and immediately had to fight against the Turks in the Great Turkish War also known as the War of the Holy League 1683-1699. This war finally led to the Peace of Karlowitz in 1699.This work gives directions and arrangements for ritual processions that the Turkish Sultan Suleiman III ordered after his victories during the so-called Holy Wars against the Christians. It is of great importance for our understanding of the problematic Turkish-European relations during the 17th century especially as an interesting example of counter-propaganda. One of Suleiman IIIs directions presented in the book for example ordered that one Christian slave or one Jew was to be killed every fifteen minutes as part of the procession. One can imagine the reaction of a Christian reading this text: although the crusades were over this could provoke war and violence between the parties.Wrappers worn and somewhat frayed a few worm holes but still in good condition.l Bibliotheca bibliographica Aureliana CX XVIIe siècle XIV Bordeaux 2176 not mentioning the portrait; cf. 168431760AB1684. The Fifth Edition very much enlarged. London Printed for J.R.for Nat. Crouch at the Bell in the Poultry near Cheapside 1684. Duodecimo. Frontispice 2 231 3 pages. With four ful-page woodcuts including Frontispice showing historical events beheadings etc. Page 227 misprinted as page 229. LAst three pages are "Delights for the Ingenious - Books printed for N. Crouch". Original full leather-covered boards. Binding in very poor condition with larger parts of the leather missing. Minor lesions to Frontispice and some papes to front and rear. Extremely rare ! Nathaniel Crouch born c. 1632 was an English printer and bookseller and under the pseudonym Robert or Richard Burton sometimes R.B. wrote historical books as well. As a historian he is considered a hack borrowing material from other books and rewriting them under his pseudonym then publishing and marketing them under the Crouch imprint. Though he was the type of writer/publisher denounced in the following century by writers such as Samuel Butler Prose Observations and Alexander Pope The Dunciad more recent assessments of his life and career see him as an important figure in the development of historiography especially in the popularization of a hitherto high-culture genre of discourse. Crouch was one of the authors who covered the 1655 Whitehall Conference to consider the resettlement of the Jews in England the other being Henry Jessey. The report is found in the 1719 edition of his Two Journeys to Jerusalem. It is different from Jessey's version in two respects: firstly it actually names the participants and secondly it includes some anti-Semitic additions to the conclusions of the conference. Around September 30 1681 an unlikely forerunner of Reader's Digest called Historical Rarities in London and Westminster was first published by Crouch. Robert Chambers' Book of Days 1864 elaborated: "With probably little education but something of a natural gift for writing Crouch had the sagacity to see that the works of the learned from their form and price were kept within a narrow circle of readers while there was a vast multitude outside who were able and willing to read provided that a literature suited to their means and capacities was supplied to them. He accordingly set himself the task of transfusing large and pompous books into a series of small cheap volumes modestly concealing his authorship under his nom de plume. Thus he produced Surprising Miracles of Nature and Art and many other treatises on very plain paper and sold them at an exceedingly reasonable rate. His enterprise and diligence were rewarded by large sales and considerable wealth." Wikipedia hardcover

A truly wonderful copy and especially fine survival of a book rarely if ever found in such condition. RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS HIGHLY IMPORTANT EARLY HISTORY OF THE INCAN CIVILIZATION AND OF THE CONQUEST OF PERU BY THE SPANISH. De la Vega was a prince of Incan royalty by virtue of his mother who was descended from the last Incan King of Peru. He took great pride in his Incan ancestry styling himself “Garcilasso Inca†and becoming a dedicated student of the Peruvian language and traditions. However the translator also tells us that “the Spanish humour was most prevalent in him so that he delighted much to tell us as in diverse places that he was also the son of Garcilasso de la Vega one of the first Conquerours of the new World.†Such an illustrious ancestry provides for a rendering of the history of the Incan civilization from a unique point of view.
The first section of the text details the early history of the Incas before the Spanish conquest including their laws and government and other “particulars relating to their Empire and Policies.†The second part details the Spanish conquest and the various civil wars and rebellions that came along with them and after them. The first part was published in Lisbon in 1609 and the second part in 1617. This edition is the first English translation by Sir Paul Rycaut. This is a classic work comprehensive and painstakingly researched and remains today one of the chief authorities on the subject of ancient Peru. by Miles Flesher for Richard Tonson hardcover
