192135634Manchester U.K.: 26th June 1921. 1921. Good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling one side of a sheet of "Mudie's Manchester Limited" 8 inch high by 5 inch wide cream letterhead. Mudie has inserted "Library" after "Mudie's" in the heading and has added "England" to the address. Signed "Miss Doris Mudie". The date of reply to the letter has been stamped below the address & there is a small tear to the top edge & another to the left edge of the letter. There are several pin pricks to the top left corner & 2 small tears in the address have been repaired. Folded twice for mailing. Together with a carbon copy of the recipient's typed reply. Good.
Mudie writes to the editor of the New York World asking about the possibility of setting up an American lecture tour about the postwar condition of Central Europe. "During 1920 I had recourse to travel over all the European belligerent states and to administer relief in the new Republic of Czecho-Slovakia. I gathered much information political and economic while there and subsequently in the enemy states Austria Germany and Hungary". The reply from James Pond of the Pond Lecture Bureau on behalf of the New York World editor notes that the subject would be of interest to Americans but that setting up any lecture series would have to be preceded by a meeting since interest depends so much on the personality of the lecturer.
Doris Mudie was a British author and translator. She translated and edited with Elizabeth Hill "The Letters of Dostoyevsky to His Wife" 1930 and "The Letters of Lenin" 1937. Mel Brooks' screenplay for "The Twelve Chairs" was based on an English translation by Mudie of the novel "Sitting on Diamonds" by Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov. Manchester, U.K.: 26th June, 1921. unknown

196731602Boston: Trust Incorporated 1967. First Edition. Tabloid 17-1/2" x 12"; 24pp; illus. Horizontal fold as issued; very mild toning to extremities; a Near Fine example. The notorious "obscene" issue of cult leader Mel Lyman's idiosyncratic solipsistic and generally self-indulgent underground newspaper issued only in twenty-four issues between June 1967 and April 1968. Despite the paper's and Lyman's many failings Robert Glessing The Underground Press in America Bloomington: 1970 notes that The Avatar was ".experimental innovative and highly creative" and ".graphically one of the most sophisticated of the underground newspapers."

The current issue is justly famous in the annals of Sixties underground publishing. After the newspaper's staff was harassed on obscenity charges by Cambridge authorities the editors decided to run a double-page centerfold drawn by artist Eben Given made up entirely of obscene words in three-inch high letters. It was not the first or last attack on the censors in The Avatar but it was certainly the most visible and helped to increase the magazine's circulation to the mid five-figures. In the end it was neither a lack of funding or staff dissent that ultimately brought an end to The Avatar but rather the withdrawal of Lyman's support. By the spring of 1968 Lyman grew dissatisfied with the paper -- largely because the editors did not feature enough of his own writing -- and shut it down at the peak of its popularity.
