Additionally as described in the flyer accompanying the later book The Years as Catches Charles Olson was so impressed reading this poem he insisted Kenneth Rexroth introduce Duncan to him beginning a lifelong friendship. 1982390469San Francisco 1982. Unbound. Fine. Two photomechanically reproduced flyers measuring 8.5" x 11" and 8.5" x 14". One is on yellow paper and the other on orange. Fine with slight abrasions where they were tacked up. Two flyers protesting the incarceration of activist Peter Plate for his role in the 1979 San Francisco White Night Riots. One flyer shows a group of protesters by a damaged police car and declares "remember white night" while the other briefly explains the case against Plate under a drawing of a burning police car. The riots occurred on the night of May 21 1979 and were a result of the "lenient verdict" in the case of Dan White notorious killer of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk. White was only sentenced to voluntary manslaughter which outraged the citizens of San Francisco. The gay community and the police department were already at odds but White being a former officer helped to intensified what was scheduled to be a "peaceful protest" into a conflict. During the night activist Peter Plate was arrested for participating in the riots and charges were brought against him. By 1982 Plate was scheduled to stand trial for "multiple felony charges" including "assault and battery on a police officer and burning police cars." Ultimately the city targeted a few people for the actions of thousands. The flyers urge for multiple protests that year August 17th July 14th and December 19th. "The malevolence that the district attorney's office and the police department display in their desire to convict Peter Plate and his co-defendants reflects the criminal nature of law and order. unknown

Milk delivery emerged after farm-based household provisioning and before supermarket consolidation transformed food purchasing into a centralized retail experience centered on consumer self-service and mass refrigeration. The archive records the final stage of the dairy economy in which independent and regional dairies maintained direct household delivery through branded trucks route drivers and localized service territories before supermarket consolidation largely displaced home milk delivery after World War II. <br /> <br /> Photo archive of 10 silver gelatin photographs various sizes ranging from 3 x 5 to 8 x 10 inches primarily Midwestern and Northeastern United States circa 1925-1945. Trucks and route vehicles from multiple dairies appear throughout the archive including Friedrichs Grade A Milk of Allwood Road Delawanna New Jersey; Broadview Jersey Milk; Aristocrat Milk operated by P.J. Bair of Gap Pennsylvania; Glendale Farms Wisconsin; and Hamilton Dairies. A large Friedrichs delivery truck marked "Golden Guernsey Raw Milk" stands parked on a residential street lined with detached houses and utility poles reflecting the close integration of dairy routes into neighborhood infrastructure. A streamlined Aristocrat Milk tractor trailer appears outside a brick dairy structure with striped awnings carrying regulatory markings including Pennsylvania P.U.C. licensing information and "Owned and Operated." Two Glendale Farms workers stand inside the open side door of a compact delivery van bearing route number 59 while another uniformed driver poses beside an early Helco Cream Dairy truck in white coveralls and cap associated with sanitary dairy labor presentation during the interwar period. State and municipal health departments increasingly regulated milk during this period through pasteurization requirements bacterial testing bottling standards and "Grade A" certification programs intended to reduce outbreaks of tuberculosis typhoid scarlet fever and undulant fever transmitted through contaminated dairy products. Several trucks prominently advertise "Pasteurized" "Grade A Milk" and "Golden Guernsey Raw Milk" showing how dairies marketed sanitation breed quality and freshness directly to consumers at street level. <br /> <br /> Milk delivery photograph archive from the final period in which independent and regional dairies maintained direct household distribution through branded trucks route drivers and localized service territories before supermarket consolidation largely displaced home milk delivery after World War II. A very good copy in a bright dust wrapper which exhibits very little wear or chipping. Theres been minor professional repairs to the rear hinge as it was starting to crack and strain. Otherwise this is a very collectible copy and notoriously scarce in the ORIGINAL publishers Dust-wrapper not a facsimile with the striking image of Jean Harlow. The Beast of the City 1932 is a gritty pre-Code MGM crime drama about a ruthless police captain Jim Fitzpatrick Walter Huston who wages a violent war on organized crime in Prohibition-era Chicago clashing with mob boss Sam Belmonte Jean Hersholt and his girlfriend Daisy Jean Harlow. The film is known for its brutal violence cynical tone and a famously shocking ending exploring themes of vigilantism and the blurred lines between law and crime and features a young Mickey Rooney in an early role. Its also the film which convinced MGM production chief Irving Thalberg to buy out Harlows contract from Howard Hughes for $30000. In addition to W.R. Burnett penning the screenplay he was also assisted by Ben Hecht uncredited and John Lee Mahim. W.R. Burnett called it "one of the best crime pictures of all. Hersholt was a greasy offensive Capone. Really good." He felt it was well directed although Charles Brabin was English. "Everything about it was wrong. Making an American hoodlum picture giving it to an Englishman. Large Octavo. c. 45000 columns with illustrations photographs and also wonderful colour-illustrations. Original Hardcover in the rare art-nouveau owl-binding. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Volumes 1 - 37 in excellent condition with some minor injury to one upper hinge only. Some very few Volumes with some staining to the boards but the interior all very clean and fresh. Volume 5 of the Supplements Volume 38 overall needs to be repaired by a bookbinder Spine broken. Nordisk familjebok Swedish: "Nordic Family Book" is a Swedish encyclopedia that was published in print form between 1876 and 1957 and that is now fully available in digital form via Project Runeberg at Linköping University. The first edition of Nordisk familjebok was published in 20 volumes between 1876 and 1899 and is known as the "Idun edition" because it bears a picture of Idun the Norse mythologic goddess of spring and rejuvenation on its cover. This was published during almost a quarter of a century and particularly the first ten volumes contain material which are not seen in later editions. A good example of this is found in the end of the Berlin article which is included in the second volume from 1878 where the author finishes his article by talking about the public decency and morality which he finds to be very poor. The author continues by complaining about there being a very lazy interest in religious matters and concludes: "to all these joint circumstances one can hardly defend oneself against the thought of future threatening dangers". The second edition popularly known as Uggleupplagan "The Owl Edition" because of an owl image on its cover was published between 1904 and 1926 in 38 volumes and is the most comprehensive encyclopedia published in the Swedish language. The third edition had 17 volumes and was published between 1924 and 1937. Another three supplementary volumes were published in 1937 1938 and in 1939. The supplement covers for instance the Spanish Civil War and a heavy update on Adolf Hitler but nothing about Germany's war on Poland nor are later events mentioned. A second printing of the entire third edition was published between 1941 and 1944. Nothing essential is changed in the second printing but quite a lot of one side portraits still in black and white coloured maps of "World cities" European countries continents Swedish provinces and cities are added together with a few topics like a collection of national flags. All the added material are on unnumbered pages presumably a technical printing solution so already printed books did not require re-numbering. This edition is usually called "the 1930s edition" and are of brown colour when looking at them on a shelf. Copyrights on the three first versions have expired putting them in the public domain; while the fourth edition from the 1950s is still in copyright. Wikipedia hardcover
