Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Volumes 1 - 37 in excellent condition with some minor injury to one upper hinge only. Some very few Volumes with some staining to the boards but the interior all very clean and fresh. Volume 5 of the Supplements Volume 38 overall needs to be repaired by a bookbinder Spine broken. Nordisk familjebok Swedish: "Nordic Family Book" is a Swedish encyclopedia that was published in print form between 1876 and 1957 and that is now fully available in digital form via Project Runeberg at Linköping University. The first edition of Nordisk familjebok was published in 20 volumes between 1876 and 1899 and is known as the "Idun edition" because it bears a picture of Idun the Norse mythologic goddess of spring and rejuvenation on its cover. This was published during almost a quarter of a century and particularly the first ten volumes contain material which are not seen in later editions. A good example of this is found in the end of the Berlin article which is included in the second volume from 1878 where the author finishes his article by talking about the public decency and morality which he finds to be very poor. The author continues by complaining about there being a very lazy interest in religious matters and concludes: "to all these joint circumstances one can hardly defend oneself against the thought of future threatening dangers". The second edition popularly known as Uggleupplagan "The Owl Edition" because of an owl image on its cover was published between 1904 and 1926 in 38 volumes and is the most comprehensive encyclopedia published in the Swedish language. The third edition had 17 volumes and was published between 1924 and 1937. Another three supplementary volumes were published in 1937 1938 and in 1939. The supplement covers for instance the Spanish Civil War and a heavy update on Adolf Hitler but nothing about Germany's war on Poland nor are later events mentioned. A second printing of the entire third edition was published between 1941 and 1944. Nothing essential is changed in the second printing but quite a lot of one side portraits still in black and white coloured maps of "World cities" European countries continents Swedish provinces and cities are added together with a few topics like a collection of national flags. All the added material are on unnumbered pages presumably a technical printing solution so already printed books did not require re-numbering. This edition is usually called "the 1930s edition" and are of brown colour when looking at them on a shelf. Copyrights on the three first versions have expired putting them in the public domain; while the fourth edition from the 1950s is still in copyright. Wikipedia hardcover

A very good copy in a bright dust wrapper which exhibits very little wear or chipping. Theres been minor professional repairs to the rear hinge as it was starting to crack and strain. Otherwise this is a very collectible copy and notoriously scarce in the ORIGINAL publishers Dust-wrapper not a facsimile with the striking image of Jean Harlow. The Beast of the City 1932 is a gritty pre-Code MGM crime drama about a ruthless police captain Jim Fitzpatrick Walter Huston who wages a violent war on organized crime in Prohibition-era Chicago clashing with mob boss Sam Belmonte Jean Hersholt and his girlfriend Daisy Jean Harlow. The film is known for its brutal violence cynical tone and a famously shocking ending exploring themes of vigilantism and the blurred lines between law and crime and features a young Mickey Rooney in an early role. Its also the film which convinced MGM production chief Irving Thalberg to buy out Harlows contract from Howard Hughes for $30000. In addition to W.R. Burnett penning the screenplay he was also assisted by Ben Hecht uncredited and John Lee Mahim. W.R. Burnett called it "one of the best crime pictures of all. Hersholt was a greasy offensive Capone. Really good." He felt it was well directed although Charles Brabin was English. "Everything about it was wrong. Making an American hoodlum picture giving it to an Englishman. Comprised of 88 images of the Lucerne Milk Plant and 139 of the Regal Ice Cream Company. Silver prints the images measuring 4 ½" x 6 ½" most mounted recto/verso each with a caption and nearly all with the direction photographed in the negative; 14 loose. Quarto four volumes. Original gray paper triple-pin bindings with typed paper title labels. Some toning and wear along the extremities of the bindings; otherwise very good.<br /> <br /> Established in 1904 by dairy farmers in California's San Joaquin Valley the Lucerne brand was acquired by Safeway in 1929. According to Craig Fullmer Safeway's director of dairy supply operations "Beginning around 1930 we started acquiring fluid milk plants so we were the first retailer to have an internal supply of fresh fluid milk to our store base." To meet demand Safeway transitioned away from acquiring small bottlers and started building new plants in the late 1930s. Ice cream production began in 1951 along with the launch of Safeway's Regal brand. By 1955 Safeway operated 15 dairy plants: 12 fluid two ice cream and one cottage cheese and byproducts. <br /> <br /> The plants depicted in these albums were constructed by J.T. Thorpe & Son Inc. between September 1955 and February 1956. Located on Boxford Avenue in what is now the City of Commerce the site is the present-day home of the Vons Milk and Bread Plant. unknown

Viveu de forma simples e austera sensível e solidário com os mais desfavorecidos.</p>_x000d_<p>Tomou posse do lugar de conservador da Biblioteca Nacional em fevereiro de 1888. Trabalhou nesta instituição durante 23 anos. Empenhou-se na criação de um museu dedicado ao conhecimento das origens e tradições do povo português projeto apoiado por Bernardino Machado à época Ministro das Obras Públicas e responsável pela criação do Museu Etnográfico Português em 1893. Instalado inicialmente numa sala da Direção dos Trabalhos Geológicos este museu foi transferido em 1900 para uma ala do Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. Inaugurado a 22 de abril de 1906 designou-se Museu Etnológico atual Museu Nacional de Arqueologia denominação que detinha desde 1897. Em 1929 atingiu o limite de idade e aposentou-se. Com ocasionais sublinhados e notas a lápis.</p>_x000d_<p>Conjunto de folhetos e números de revistas muito raros e importantes para o estudo da etnografia da linguística da filologia portuguesa mirandesa e galega assim como da geografia numismática e literatura da idade média. Todos da autoria de Leite de Vasconcelos um dos maiores sábios portugueses como foi considerado a justo título. Inclui também um importante subsídio bibliográfico - um catálogo de obras do autor organizado e publicado por ele próprio.</p>_x000d_<p>O conjunto das suas obras representa mais de sessenta anos de trabalho ininterrupto nos campos da Filologia da Etnografia e da Arqueologia onde foi <em>primus inter pares</em> deixando um vasto leque de informação que serviria as gerações vindouras. Deixou em testamento ao Museu Nacional de Arqueologia parte do seu espólio científico e literário incluindo uma biblioteca com cerca de oito mil títulos para além de manuscritos correspondência gravuras e fotografias.</p>_x000d_<p>José Leite de Vasconcelos Ucanha 1858 Lisboa 1941 foi um grande erudito e professor exigente vulto maior da cultura portuguesa contemporânea. Fundador do Museu Nacional de Arqueologia em 1893 antigo Museu Etnográfico Português ou ainda Museu Etnológico e diretor do mesmo até 1929 assim como da sua revista oficial o <em>Arqueólogo Português</em> de 1895 a 1938.</p>_x000d_<p>Aniceto dos Reis Gonçalves Viana Lisboa 18401914 foi um grande filólogo contemporâneo e amigo de Leite de Vasconcelos. Fez a primeira descrição de conjunto do sistema fonético do português em 1883 e foi um dos membros da Comissão de Reforma Ortográfica de 1911. Colaborou na Revista do Conservatório Real de Lisboa 1902.</p>_x000d_<p>EN 25.5x18 cm. 4 pages numbered 215 to 218. Offprint. With occasional underlining and notes in pencil.</p>_x000d_<p>Compilattion of very rare and important pamphlets and magazine issues for the study of ethnography linguistics Portuguese Mirandese and Galician philology as well as geography numismatics and literature from the Middle Ages. All authored by Leite de Vasconcelos one of Portugal's greatest scholars as he was rightly considered. It also includes an important bibliographical resource - a catalogue of the author's works organised and published by himself.</p>_x000d_<p>The collection of all his works represents more than sixty years of uninterrupted work in the fields of Philology Ethnography and Archaeology where he was <em>primus inter pares</em> leaving a vast array of information that would serve generations to come. In his will he left part of his scientific and literary estate to the National Museum of Archaeology including a library with around 8000 titles as well as manuscripts correspondence engravings and photographs.</p>_x000d_<p>José Leite de Vasconcelos Ucanha 1858 - Lisbon 1941 was a great scholar and demanding teacher - a major figure in contemporary Portuguese culture. Founder of the National Museum of Archaeology in 1893 - formerly the Portuguese Ethnographic Museum or still the Ethnological Museum - and its director until 1929 as well as from its official magazine the <em>Arqueólogo Português</em> from 1895 to 1938.</p>_x000d_<p>Aniceto dos Reis Gonçalves Viana Lisbon 1840-1914 was a great contemporary philologist and friend of Leite de Vasconcelos. He made the first comprehensive description of the Portuguese phonetic system in 1883 and was one of the members of the Orthographic Reform Commission of 1911.
