Small octavo. 38 10 blank pp. Quarter black calf with marbled paper over flexible boards. Signature of Andrew Jackson Coffee on front board and then repeated twice once as a Major and again as a Lt. Colonel in both cases noting he was a paymaster on the titlepage. Ink blots on front board endpapers with ink calculations on one blank is a list of his expenses of a trip Charleston to Savannah to Tampa Bay to Fort Myers to New Orleans.<br /> <br /> Coffee was the great nephew of Andrew Jackson and was forced to resign from West Point for demerits in 1836. After resigning he became an engineer and paymaster in the Army and went on to serve as aide-de-camp for Zachary Taylor in the Mexican War where his actions the Battle of Buena Vista in 1847 precipitated his promotion to Lt. Colonel. Taylor chose Coffee to report to President James K. Polk about the battle. Afterwards he was an Army surveyor in California. A pleasing copy with an interesting association. Stitching lacking loosening gatherings some light spotting or soiling of front and back leaves and general edgewear else a very good copy. A contemporary owner has annotated and underlined several sections in the Tea Act. 92 pp. 8vo. These acts passed that years were seen by the author as being the most pertinent and so included in this work the rest of the acts of Parliament were to be released shortly thereafter in a second part.<br /> <br /> The acts abstracted were the 1 Tea and Window repealing the several Duties and for granting other duties in lieu and duties on coffee and cocoa nuts Act 2 The Game Act hunting license 3 The Horse Act granting duties on riding and carriage horses 4 The Postage Act increasing postage rates 5 The Pawn Broker's Act trying to reduce the handling of stolen goods 6 The Soap and Starch Act requiring the licensing of makers of starch and instilling new laws on soapmakers 7 The Cotton and Linen Act placing duties 8 The Hatter's Act requiring licenses laying additional duties on imported hats 9 The Excise Goods Act laying duties upon licences to be taken out by the makers and delers in exciseable commodities 10 The Candle Act cancelling the duty on wax candles made in Britain 11 The Distillery Act trying to discourage home distillation by discontinuing the duties uon low wines and spirits for home consumption. 12 The Hackney Coach Act increasing the charge for Hackey license 13 The Smuggling Act trying to prevent 14 Brick and Tile Act placing duties on brick and tile made in Great Britain and additional duties on those imported 15 Wax Candle Act placing additional duties on all candles except wax and spermaceti candles. Baker Gabb member of Welsh landowning family presumably in his role of solicitor acting for the Harington Family giving a detailed record of financial activity with Welsh property mainly involving the "Rents of Cadvor" giving details of income from tenants crops stock etc. and outgoings concluding with the balance due to Sir John Harington £2989.19.1. Also the Royal Oak Abergavenny. With 10 further MS items including: A. Three draft letters Harington's hand presumably relating to Cadvor accounts; B. Account Sir J.E. Harington re. Cadvor June 1814-July 1815 generated by Gabell another solicitor presumably handling accounts before Gabb see Note below expenses including rum poor rate printing handbills for sale ploughing hedging etc etc 3pp. fol.; C. "Sir J. Harington in Account with c. Gabell from Decr. 1813 to the period of his delivering over charge to Mr. Gabb in Augt 1818 2pp. cr.8vo; D. "Receipt & Disbursements of the Cadvor from the Commencement of Mr. Gabb's agency to the 10th January 1820 one page fol. with two summaries on same subject and range; E. "General View of Accounts of Mr. Baker Gabb with Sir J. Harington from 15 Augt 1815 to 10 Jany 1820 one page cr.8vo; two further brief accounts one Gabell from Dec. 1813 to June 1815. Note: Walter Savage Landor in his Llanthony days had dealings with Gabb and Gabell and apparently pilloried them as rascals in a poem but see Malcolm Elwin "Walter Savage Landor": "Baker Gabb i 756-1 821 resided over his office in Monk Street House in Abergavenny ; with him . By his negligence evasions and talent for perquisites Gabell deserved Landor's indignation but Gabb was a man of repute"; Elwin also says "The Gabbs were an old family of repute in Abergavenny; besides their hereditary practice as attorneys and stewards to the barony" as in this collection.
