Van Dine's Philo Vance detective series. At an archery range a dead body is found shot through the heart with only a chess bishop left as a clue. In later years Basil Rathbone would take on another well-known detective role in the 1939 "Sherlock Holmes" series. This film however constituted his debut and only performance as the rather more stylish New York investigator.<br/><br/>White titled wrappers noted as Dialogue Cutting Continuity on the front wrapper rubber-stamped copy No. 1739 and production No. 75160 dated Dec. 19 1929 with credits for film editor William Le Vanway. Basil Rathbone's only portrayal of the stylish New York P.I. Philo Vance. He would take on the role of Sherlock Holmes for which he is best known beginning in 1939.<br/><br/>Beige titled wrappers with M.G.M. label dated AUGUST 10 1929 with credits for author S.S.
