Square and tight overall. Bookplates to endpapers and ink number "726" on title-page a private library notation we assume. Incredibly important 1835 record of various actions against and treaties with the various Indian tribes of North America. Includes a census of the Creek nation as well as the first print appearance of several Indian treaties. Toning to text. A Very Good copy of a very rare book. GPO (Printed by Duff Green) hardcover

Small octavo. 38 10 blank pp. Quarter black calf with marbled paper over flexible boards. Signature of Andrew Jackson Coffee on front board and then repeated twice once as a Major and again as a Lt. Colonel in both cases noting he was a paymaster on the titlepage. Ink blots on front board endpapers with ink calculations on one blank is a list of his expenses of a trip Charleston to Savannah to Tampa Bay to Fort Myers to New Orleans.<br /> <br /> Coffee was the great nephew of Andrew Jackson and was forced to resign from West Point for demerits in 1836. After resigning he became an engineer and paymaster in the Army and went on to serve as aide-de-camp for Zachary Taylor in the Mexican War where his actions the Battle of Buena Vista in 1847 precipitated his promotion to Lt. Colonel. Taylor chose Coffee to report to President James K. Polk about the battle. Afterwards he was an Army surveyor in California. A pleasing copy with an interesting association. "In the late-1880s the Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company began including colorful advertising "trade cards" inside their coffee packages. This was a popular advertising practice at the turn-of-the-century for many companies. Colorful and whimsical cards often printed as chromolithographs were attractive to Victorians obsessed with collecting - - they went in albums scrapbooks extra-illustrated texts and were traded among friends. This was also a time when postcards greeting cards calling cards rewards of merit and cartes-de-visites were all the rage. It was an age of ephemera. Arbuckle innovated on this craze by issuing their trade cards as collectible series - - banking on an idea that customers would choose to buy their coffee just to get the next card in a series. And they were right! Consumers loved completing the sets." Each card consisted of a map of a United States' state or territory with related illustrations on the front of the card and with information about a state on the verso. A complete collection would create Arbuckles' Illustrated Atlas of the United States of America. 1/4" closed tear to top edge and with light soiling and bump to 2 corners. Very good. Arbuckle Bros.
