4to., First Edition thus, with 8 coloured plates, very numerous monochrome illustrations (a number full-page) in the text and decorative endpapers; yellow cloth, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy in dustwrapper. First published in 1970, this is arguably the best of the single-volume compendia of herbs and spices. A well-known mountaineer and member of Hunt's 1953 Everest Expedition, Stobart later developed two other careers - as photographer and cookery writer. This volume was some twenty years in the making. Curiously elusive in this condition.
211 pages including index. Includes descriptions, origins, history, culinary uses and availability. A much needed source of information. Please note: pages 5 through 8 are loose. Otherwise, unmarked and lightly worn. Remains a nice copy in glossy covers. Book
Since ancient times Saffron has been used not only as a seasoning but as a medicinal plant, and its history features in many countries and cultures such as ancient Greece, Persia and Rome as well as England, primarily in Saffron Walden, Essex... The slender, dry crocus filaments add a rich colour, fragrance and flavour to food, qualities which have been much prized in the cuisines of many countries.160p. illus bibliography ndex Book

8vo., small neat signature on half-title; original pictorial wrappers, joints lightly rubbed else a bright, clean copy. Revised issue of a work first published in 1970. It was to have been the first volume of a series titled 'English Cooking Ancient and Modern', but in the event the project was never progressed. In the revised issues the dustwrapper title reads (erroneously) 'Salts', and the original cover photograph by Anthony Denney is replaced by a detail of a still life by de Heem.
8vo., Second Impression; original pictorial wrappers, a very good, clean copy. Second impression of a work first published in the previous year. Sadly the projected series was never continued. Cover photograph by Anthony Denney.
8vo., First Edition, ALL PUBLISHED; original photographic wrappers, backstrip lightly faded else a very good, bright, clean copy. First appearance of this work, conceived initially as the first volume of what would have been a fascinating series. In the event, the sole volume published. Cover photograph by Anthony Denney. The original edition is strangely elusive.
