Il volume raccoglie molti degli articoli che Zeri pubblicò sui quotidiani, dalla fine del 1990 alla morte. La "memoria" del titolo fa riferimento a persone ed eventi che il noto critico ebbe modo di conoscere nel corso della sua esistenza. Città, istituzioni e ambienti offrono a Zeri lo spunto per divagazioni anche bizzarre, espressione di una cultura onnivora, senza preclusioni. Lo "sguardo" è quello dello Zeri critico d'arte. Accanto a pagine su Tiziano e sulle "fughe" di quadri dall'Italia si trovano escursioni severe o divertite intorno a restauri, oggetti e dimore di ogni tempo e luogo, dove, mobili, abiti e cibi sono spie importantissime per "leggere" il gusto e i sapori di un'epoca.

Il luogo: il brano di un secolo sbranato come mai altro secolo fu; sbranato al punto da ritrovare lacerati i tessuti connettivi di quegli organismi che, nati nel quinto secolo avanti Cristo, avevano imposto un corso (non torrentizio ma fluviale) alla storia dell'uomo, fino a ieri. Se il quinto secolo, colmo di spiriti determinanti (Confucio, Buddha, Platone, Pitagora), vide Lao-Tzû gettare il seme del Tâo col Tâo-tê-king, il nostro secolo, il ventesimo dopo Cristo, assiste nei suoi primi decenni alla fine del taoismo, anzi al suo oblio. La storia colloca il nostro punto di vista su Tiziano in un luogo del tempo lacerato da sismi profondi, illuminato dal tramonto apparente dei soli metafisici preesistenti.

Nel sensuale gineceo all'aperto del Bagno di Diana e delle Ninfe di Palma il Vecchio (Kunsthistorisches Museum), in primo piano Diana indirizza le dita a forbice della mano sinistra verso il basso, nella cavità terrena che cela la preziosa sostanza dell'acqua sorgiva. A volte basta un gesto per far comprendere qualcosa a un interlocutore. Le dita a V capovolta qui segnalano un luogo o una sorgente di natura iniziatica. Che il segno a V abbia una relazione con la verginità artemidea e con le corna (a volte sostituisce l'attributo di Diana, ovvero il crescente lunare che porta sopra il capo) pare confermato nella Nymphe de Fontainebleau di Benvenuto Cellini, ora al Louvre. Nell'altorilievo in bronzo la ninfa abbraccia la testa di un cervo, mentre con la mano sinistra rivolge le dita a V nel flusso ondoso dell'acqua che fuoriesce da vasi. La presenza dei cani, del cervo e dell'acqua indurrebbe a vedere nella figura della ninfa anche l'immagine di Artemide/Diana, dea lunare che sovrintende le fonti, le maree e la caccia, dove il cervo è un animale sacro alla dea, un rimando ad Atteone, ovvero all'uomo che ha visto la dea nuda ed è stato trasformato in preda e divorato dai propri cani.
