Aby Warburg (1866-1929) scelse come argomento della sua tesi di dottorato due dipinti mitologici di Botticelli: la Nascita di Venere e la Primavera, a quel tempo divisi ed esposti rispettivamente agli Uffizi e all'Accademia. Nella scelta di due «capolavori», già allora considerati «emblematici» del Rinascimento, oltre alla volontà di porre in risalto il significato che l'interesse per l'antichità assumeva nella cultura fiorentina del tardo Quattrocento, è possibile riconoscere un'intenzione polemica e una sfida alla visione «estetizzante» di tali opere da parte di un pubblico «moderno», ispirata dalle concezioni dei preraffaelliti e dell'Art Nouveau. La dissertazione, presentata nel dicembre 1891, venne pubblicata due anni più tardi, con il significativo sottotitolo di Ricerche sull'immagine dell'antichità nel primo Rinascimento italiano, e con una dedica a Hubert Janitschek e al docente di archeologia classica Adolf Michaelis, di cui il giovane Warburg aveva nel frattempo seguito i corsi.
